Missing German shepherd travels over 40 miles across icy tundra for a soul-stirring reunion
When a dog is on a mission, nothing can stop it – especially if that dog is a German Shepherd! The story of Pepper, a 10-year-old dog shows us that dogs really are the most amazing creatures!
In late April, Donna Adams and her family snowmobiled to Whale Cove.
This might sound strange to many of us “southerners”, but in Nunavut, Canadas largest and most northern territory, roads aren’t always available. Donna was traveling for the funeral of her great-nieve and surprise weather and stopped them from taking a plane. In most places in Nunavut, planes and boats are the main methods of transportation.
Pepper, their dog, started acting up right before they left for the cove.
“She was very concerned. Like she wouldn’t leave us alone,” Adams said, describing how she kept following their sledge out onto the ice. Eventually Adams coaxed her to return home.
The following day, Donna’s daughter flew to the funeral since the weather had cleared up and her son stayed home and went to work. Things seemed normal until Donna returned home to find that Pepper was gone.
Upon arriving back at Rankin Inlet, Donna learned that Pepper was missing!
With their niece dying so recently, none of them really were prepared to give much attention to their dog at the time. It was a reality, even if it was a harsh one:
“We didn’t have any room to worry about finding her, looking for her, getting her back,” Adams said.
After posting about their dog to Facebook, they hoped someone would see her.
After nearly six days of waiting, however, things looked grim. Her daughter and granddaughter were back in Whale Cove and nobody knew where their dog had possibly gone.
Then, something incredible happened.
A girl in Whale Cove sent a picture of a German Shepherd that had wandered into town to Donna’s daughter and a spark of hope was ignited for the family again.
“So we went zooming on my ATV… and drove down the street yelling for her, calling her name,” she said.
They soon found a dog that looked like Pepper, only a LOT skinnier!
“I yelled out her name with all my strength,” Adams said. “She perked up her ears when she recognized us… and came at me so hard, she nearly knocked me my glasses over.”
Donna and her family instantly burst into tears with the reality that they wouldn’t have to grieve the loss of two friends in their lives at the same time.
Pepper must have had quite the journey!
The distance between the two locations is about 70 km (43 miles) and is a solid 2-hour snowmobile ride at least. Incredibly, Pepper was able to make the journey all alone to a familiar town where she was found. Donna thinks that she was able to smell them all the way back!
Pepper had probably felt their distress and wanted to comfort them.
Dogs will do anything for the people they love! Pepper literally traveled across the arctic in order to be with the family she cared for. Now THAT’S a story!
