Missionary describes realities of Ugandan orphanage, makes mom rush home to cuddle her child
Dayna Mager never realized how heartbreaking the world can be until she heard about the plight of Ugandan orphans. Now she never wants to let go of her child.
Every baby deserves the love of their parents. It’s one of the most basic things that every child is entitled to. Sadly, there are many infants across the world who don’t even have this.
Like many people in the Western world, Dayna and Matt Mager knew that there were children who desperately needed a mother’s love.
But until they heard an account from an orphanage in Uganda, they couldn’t put the tragedy into perspective. And the story is heartbreaking enough to make anyone want to lavish their children with love.
It began when Dayna and Matt attended a worship conference in Michigan. While they were there, a missionary recanted their trip to an orphanage. The missionary’s experience and his story of it were so shocking, it affected everyone in the room.
The missionary went into the orphanage and noticed something strange.
The orphanage was full of babies, but the place was quiet.
Then he looked into the room with the babies. There were over 100 cribs in there, and most of them were full. And still, there was no noise.
Anyone who has been around a baby knows that they cry very often. Surely, the room should have been filled with crying, as it was packed with babies?
The missionary asked one of the volunteers at the orphanage why the babies were so quiet, concerned for their safety.
“Then her response to him is something I will never, ever forget. Ever.” – Dayna Mager.
The volunteer explained that the babies had been crying, until recently. At first, the babies had been crying for hours on end. But after around a week, the babies learned that when they cried, no one was coming for them.
All of the babies had learned that they were unwanted, unloved.
When the missionary had finished describing this, the entire conference was also silent.
They were taking in what he had said. And then they realized that there were many more abandoned children across the world. What the missionary had witnessed was not a one-off occurrence. In some places, it was common.
When Dayna got home, the first thing she did, after paying the babysitter, was climb into her baby’s crib. The child, Luella, was sleeping soundly. The silence in the room reminded Dayna of the story, so she kept on hugging her infant.
“As Luella rested her tiny little 10lb body against mine and we rocked, I made a promise to her. A promise that I would always come to her.” – Dayna Mager.
Dayna’s husband took a picture of his wife and his daughter in the crib. He soon uploaded it to Facebook with an explanation of why Dayna needed to hug her child so desperately. Pretty soon, the post went viral. To date, it has been shared millions of times.
Every parent should be able to take what Dayna learned to heart.
You should love your child unconditionally, no matter what. Yes, children can be hard work much of the time, but you must also persist and show them love. Just remember that not all children are lucky enough to have parents.
