Shoppers watch on as couple plays familiar tune – and gets quite a workout – on giant “floor piano”

If you’ve never seen the 1988 movie Big with Tom Hanks, go watch it now.

For the rest of us, the “walking piano” will look familiar from the scene in which Tom Hank’s character Josh – who gets his wish of becoming a grown-up overnight – impresses a toy company executive with his child-like enthusiasm for all things “kid.”

The duo delightfully interrupts holiday shopping at the legendary F.A.O. Schwartz by hopping around on the piano and playing “Heart and Soul” and “Chopsticks” in the middle of the showroom floor.

While the “walking piano” has actually been around since 1982, the film was where it got its big break.

So it was equal parts nostalgia (for those who saw the film) and fascination (for those who hadn’t) when a couple recreated the performance.

The shopping center show took place in 2017 and was uploaded to YouTube shortly afterward where it has now garnered over 5 million views.

The video was recorded live at the “Top-Shopping Mall ‘Weserpark'” in Bremen, Germany and performed by a man who goes by “Mister Piano” and his lovely assistance.

They dedicated the performance to the Italian engineer and designer that invented the walking piano – Remo Saraceni.

Mister Piano is actually performer Dennis Volk – and there’s an awful lot he can do with a piano, with his hands AND his feet.

He can play the piano while doing acrobatics; hop, skip, and jump along the “walking piano”; and even play two pianos at the same time! (You can even book him for private parties!)

Sadly, the name of his talented assistant is unclear, although it’s safe to say the mall performance wouldn’t be the same without her.

In the video, the two reenact the beloved moment from Big by playing “Heart and Soul” (a song composed in the 1930s by Hoagy Carmichael) – and boy is that some good cardio!

Volk starts out by playing the opening lines and gets a round of applause from the crowd, whicn clearly recognizes it.

As he starts again, his assistant begins to accompany him – and in some pretty musical leggings at that!

Their duet draws more of a crowd with every passing minute.

The audience is having a blast even if they aren’t exactly capable of clapping to the beat when Mister Piano encourages them to join in. But aside from annoying commenters to no end, it didn’t really mar the performance.

Let’s face it, it’s important to get the crowd involved and any good performer can keep the beat in their head anyway.

What would have been really troublesome was if the onlookers had sped up the tempo – now THAT would be a true test of Mister Piano’s skills!

Since it’s an impromptu public performance the goal is simply having fun and introducing people to a unique, new instrument.

Doesn’t the prospect of piano lessons seem far more exciting when it involves handstands?!

Overall, it’s a performance we’d certainly stop to see on a shopping day.

Now we’re wondering why they don’t have these at our local gyms and schools!
