Incredibly unique routine earns young ice skater the gold medal

Ice skating is such a beautiful sport. Whether watching a performance in person or on TV, you’re probably like most of us — you hold your breath during every turn, twist and jump, hoping the skater nails it.

Somehow, professionals make it all look so easy. But if you’ve ever been skating, you know that’s not necessarily the case. Most of us wobble and fall…a lot. Not only was one young skater fluid on the ice but she gave a performance so phenomenal and unique, it earned her the Gold Medal.

So, who is Maqdalene Yacoba Kristanti?

This young lady hails from Indonesia. Even as a young child, she showed remarkable skill on the ice. But what makes her so special is her ability to incorporate unique moves and props seldom seen in competitions. During one performance in Malaysia, her routine shocked everyone.

She showcases her skill via videos

While it’s not hard to find videos of Kristanti ice skating, one performance, in particular, astounded every viewer. Initially, it was uploaded in 2018. But since then, it’s been seen more than 400,000 times. She might be young but also supernaturally gifted.

Her Disney-inspired performance

In this video, Kristanti skates to the song, “How Far I’ll Go.” Although it’s inspired by the Disney movie, Moana, it’s something that both kids and adults enjoy. From start to finish, people in the audience were mesmerized by just how skilled this young lady is. The moves she does are what you’d expect from a professional skater with many more years of experience.

She incorporates a faux boat and paddle in her routine

At the start of the video, Kristanti skates toward the center of the ice with the props in her hand. Because they’re almost as big as she is, you wonder how on earth she’s going to compete with them. She may be tiny and the props might be relatively large, but that doesn’t prevent her from giving a heart-stopping performance.

Cute as a button

Dressed in a coral colored top, grass skirt, and with long, flowing black hair, she looks just like the main character in the movie. Once the music starts, she wiggles her arms to mimic the rolling of ocean waves. From there, she goes into a few flawless spins.

Then the performance gets really exciting

While working around the boat and paddle lying on the ice, she completes a few more difficult moves. Next, she skates over to the paddle, picks it up, and pretends to be rowing a boat. It’s all in perfect synchronization to the music. Even with the prop still in her hand, she does a single jump that’s simply beautiful.

She won the gold and the hearts of millions

After some additional jumps and pins, Kristanti steps inside the boat, lifts it up, and then continues skating. For most skaters, having a big prop around your waist would get in the way but not for this 10-year-old. She doesn’t miss a beat.

Keep in mind — to do the spins, skaters use their arms for balance. But in her routine, she’s busy holding onto the prop. Even with that, she’s spot-on throughout the entire performance. If she’s this good at 10, you can only imagine how far her ice-skating career will go.
