Doctors and nurses aren't the only ones on the front line – here's to the unsung hospital heroes
By now, everyone knows that the entire world is fighting a pandemic on a global scale.
N-Covid 19 has infected the world, country by country. And now, the world has turned towards doctors, nurses, the medical and scientific world to take us out of this pandemic.
And to protect them and help them protect the patients and each other, their fellow citizens work hard day and night to give them the supplies they need, from PPE suits, to face masks, to face shields, and many more.
It’s how people thank them for their sacrifice and hard work.
But there’s also another category of people working in hospitals that we tend to overlook. They don’t have medical degrees but they are still at the hospitals working hard to support the ones who do have medical degrees.
Who are they?
They are the janitors, housekeepers, cleaning crews, and custodians, who make sure the hospitals are clean and safe. They are the secretaries, receptionists, maintenance workers, and technicians, who make sure the hospitals, machines, rooms, and everything inside the hospital are working well.
We’ve all heard the global battle cry, “We came to work for you. Please stay at home for us.”
Countless medical workers have held up this sign and posted it on social media for everyone to see. The people who don’t work in the medical world, in supermarkets/groceries/convenience stores, pharmacy and banks have the option to work from home.
They don’t have that option.
Medical doctors and nurses have to stay in hospitals because they’re the ones treating the patients.
And the cleaning crew are responsible for deep cleaning, disinfecting and scrubbing the surfaces and areas that are hosts of potentially dangerous germs and viruses.
They also handle corrosive chemicals, haul heavy objects and come into contact with potentially infectious garbage and with the coronavirus, N-Covid-19.
“People don’t realise that we’re in the middle between the health service and the average person – we’re the people tasked with keeping everyone safe in work, schools, at the doctors and dentists, so we take it very seriously,” Deb Lawrence, the owner of a cleaning company in England, said.
They’re still in the frontlines of this pandemic even if they’re not directly treating patients.
“I don’t feel particularly safe at the moment; we’re just all getting on with it,” Stephen, a cleaner at the emergency room, added.
They’re putting their lives at stake for us to do their part to end this pandemic. It may not be the most glamorous job in the world but they know they’re doing important work.
“At the very least, I’m glad that I could lessen the burdens of the doctors and nurses,” Carl Vien, a hospital janitor, remarked.
And they’re not recognized and appreciated enough. Facebook user JJ Westgate wanted to change that.
“I know doctors and nurses are on the front lines. But can we get a shoutout to the low wage workers in housekeeping? There is no hospital that would not grind to a halt in 5 minutes without them,” JJ wrote on Facebook. “Let’s extend this hero worship.”
And he paved the way for his family and friends to show their appreciation as well.
“Yes! Bless them. And bless all the way too low wage workers that are keeping this world going during these crazy times!” Katie Murphy-Darling commented.
“These folks deserve respect, and a lot better pay. This is work that HAS to be done, and it has to be done well, for everyone’s health and safety,” Patsy Rethore-Larson added.
“Hell yes!!!! A hospital can not function without them,” Megan Nichols remarked.
