Mom and daughter duo create colorful 3D chalk art in driveway to make neighbors smile

Remember when you were a kid, and your mom let you get busy with the chalk on your front drive? While your drawings of flowers, smiley faces and rainbows probably seemed really impressive at the time, let’s be honest, it’s unlikely that they’d win you any awards.

Chalk isn’t generally the serious artist’s tool of choice – but Jan Riggins and her 13-year-old daughter, Olivia, can’t get enough of it. The two creative souls are incredibly talented when it comes to producing works of art out of chalk, and have even entered into competitions for their designs.

Jan, who also paints in watercolor, decided that when this year’s competitions were cancelled due to COVID-19, she and her daughter could still put their skills to use, if only to impress their neighbors.

Speaking to Bored Panda about her work, Jan said that neighbors “really, really liked it”, which prompted her and Olivia to continue with their creations. And they really are beautiful – take a look at some of our favorites below.

E.T lives on… in Jan’s front yard. She somehow manages to capture just how adorably freaky E.T. is in this drawing.

An example of how Jan outlines her drawings before filling them with color. We’d never believe that such a basic outline could produce something so incredible.

Jan’s a fan of today’s movies, or maybe that’s her daughter’s influence. Olivia gets the credit for doing a great job on this design.

Olivia and her mom are even producing driveway chalk art in celebration of high school seniors being accepted into college. At a time when no-one can hold a proper celebration with family and friends, Jan’s chalk art is certainly second-best.

Jan and Olivia started their hobby drawing koi fish, but it’s clear they’ve now perfected all marine life to the very last detail. At least quarantine is giving them plenty of practice time!

Not only do the mom-daughter duo make sure to celebrate graduations, they’re on hand to write a happy birthday message whenever they find out that someone in the neighborhood has hit a milestone. They definitely know how to make their neighbors feel special.

Before quarantine, Jan usually only got her chalks out a few times a year. Now she’s been able to take on the hobby as a daily practice, and daughter Olivia has even been able to get involved. We’d imagine their time together has strengthened their bond in these past few weeks.

Teen Olivia comes from a family of 4 generations of artists: her mom Jan, Jan’s mom, and Jan’s grandmother. Though their styles vary somewhat, there’s no denying that each of these women are equally talented.

What better way to celebrate May 4th than with some Star Wars-inspired artwork? We love that Olivia chalked one side of this creation and Jan chalked the other. The pair really do make a great double act.

We feel as if we all have a bit of defiant crawfish inside of us at the moment. The level of detail on this piece is seriously impressive.

Jan and Olivia might be practicing their art for their own therapeutic purposes, but they’re bringing smiles to their neighborhood while they’re at it. Keep up the good work, ladies – we look forward to seeing your future designs!
