Daycares have an important responsibility to look after the most vulnerable children. One daycare failed this responsibility in a horrifying way.

Alice Martin is a hard-working mother. She and her family live in Tucson, Arizona.

Since she came back to work from maternity leave, she had trusted a local daycare, Creative Beginning Preschool, to look after her baby, Rose.

At first, things were going well. Alice could see that Rose was happy when she picked her up at the end of the day. But one day, things would go horribly wrong.

On the day in question, Alice picked the then 15-month-old Rose up, as usual. It was only when the mother bathed the baby at night when she made the shocking discovery.

Alice’s back was covered in what looked like human bite marks.

The site of the bite marks was sickening. How could anyone do this, Alice initially thought. And what else had they done that didn’t leave a visible mark?

“I was just in complete shock for about a minute. And then I started sobbing and crying and just holding her.”- Alice Martin.

When Alice had managed to compose herself, she examined the marks more closely. Overall, she counted more than 25 separate marks on Rose’s body.

A little later, Alice filed a police report. She hoped that the police would investigate the incident thoroughly. Sadly, as time passed, it became clear that the police were barely looking into the matter.

Alice also took Rose to the doctor. The doctor then confirmed to Alice one of her worst fears: the bites were definitely from a human.

Secondly, the bites appeared to come from a child, based on the size of them.

Naturally, Alice took Rose out of the daycare. She has since tried to balance her work life with looking after Rose on a more permanent basis.

The best-case scenario in this story is that a child slightly older than Rose (based on the teeth marks) bit the child randomly and caused no further harm. Still, the carers should have put a stop to the biting before it began.

A news report of Alice and Rose’s story then made its way onto YouTube, where it made a significant impact. It has, to date, shocked almost 500,000 viewers. It also has more than 9,000 likes and 1,100 comments. People have been saying things like this:

Another news team then investigated Creative Beginning Pre School and discovered some shocking facts about the daycare.

The reporters contacted the Arizona Department of Health to access the daycare’s inspection reports. It turns out that over the years, the daycare had received dozens of citations from the government. In 2018 alone, the daycare received 22 citations.

The majority of these citations stated that the staff members were inadequately trained. However, for some reason, none of these numerous issues led to any enforcement actions.

Clearly, it’s important for all parents to research daycare facilities before trusting them with their children.

State departments of health inspection records will likely show which facilities offer high standards of care.

And more action needs to be taken on the part of the government to improve inadequate daycare centers.
