You typically go into the “business” of having a kid nonchalantly. It’s a huge decision and will be the biggest time and financial investment for the rest of your life! Not to mention the fact that it’s a human life we are talking about.

When it’s finally time, we do everything we can to make sure things are ready.

Childproof EVERYTHING! The outlets, corners, tables, and anything that can be pulled over needs to get nailed down. We go to crazy lengths to make sure we are ready for the little package. Books, classes, and new products galore. Despite all that prep, there are still some things we can’t control.

Wendy Norman was extra careful when she decided to have a kid.

Wendy knew it was time for her to pursue childbirth! The first step in her journey, however, was to find a sperm donor. The process behind acquiring a sperm donor is deliberate and careful, and Wendy was ready for it. Reading descriptions of the donor, looking at medical history, and more are all considered when picking the right match.

After reading tons of profiles, she finally found her jackpot.

From the paper she was provided, her kid was probably going to conquer the known world! The donor was a 6-foot-four college athlete with an IQ of 160 and was in school to become a neuroscience engineer. Wow. When Wendy saw all these details, the decision was made.

Years later and Wendy has an 18-year-old son.

Wendy and her son had an open relationship when it came to talking about her son Alex’s dad. From her perspective, he had nothing to be ashamed of! His dad was a doctor, a college athlete, and a kindhearted individual! Thing’s weren’t as they originally seemed, however.

The pride that Wendy and Alex had in their donor was misplaced.

If you thought it sounded too good to be true, you were right. Donor 9623 was later revealed to be a man named Chris. In short, Chris was NOT the man he said he was. Not even close.

Chris was a convicted criminal with a psychological disorder.

After dropping out of college, Chris was in and out of jail for attempted burglary and severe schizophrenic episodes. The man that Alex and Wendy hoped he was was just a criminal with mental health struggles. They had all been tricked.

When Alex and Wendy found out, they were floored.

Understandably, the two didn’t want to believe the news. It was tough to hear and meant that what they believed for the past 18 years was a total lie. Things began to make sense, however, when they thought about it. Alex struggle with mental health issues of his own, with some of them likely being genetic.

Once the news broke, the scam was larger in scope than they realized.

Chris’s sperm had been used with dozens of people who had trusted the bank. The tally was a total of 36 children that Chris had fathered. Alex had brothers and sisters all across the world who were sold a flat-out lie. Chris even addressed the issue on a podcast:

“I hope that the families involved, and [particularly the children involved, can find it in their hearts to forgive me. I know they must feel like I betrayed their trust. I feel terrible about it. I really do. I’m sorry.” – Inside Edition

Alex and Wendy are embroiled with the sperm bank in a legal battle.

With all the trauma and lies, it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t be compensated somehow. The sperm bank is arguing Chris tricked them, but it seems like it would be on them to do the requisite checks on each of their donors.
