We’d all love to live without the pressure of paying rent or a mortgage. But one person actually managed it, thanks to a weird sequence of events.

Money makes the world go round, the saying goes. But there are some people who manage to slip through the cracks of the system and get away with cheap living.

Lisa Hardy is one of them.

It all began when Hardy started working in real estate. A perk of the job was that the company would provide Hardy with a home for her family.

The real estate company owned homes all over Indianapolis, so Hardy had plenty of options. In the end, she chose a three-bed house with a spacious yard and a nice porch.

Amazingly, Hardy’s employers set no time limit on how long she could occupy the home.

Hardy expected to be put on a lease eventually. But naturally, she didn’t want to ask about it!

Next, something happened that ensured no lease was forthcoming. Hardy’s boss ended up going to prison over mortgage fraud.

The real estate company had to close as a result.

Hardy thought that the company’s closure would result in her having to leave the home.

Once again, she didn’t raise any attention to her rent-free life and hoped that she could maintain it for a little longer.

But as the days passed, nothing changed with Hardy’s situation. And she didn’t know who now owned the home that she was living in.

“I didn’t hear a word from anyone.” – Lisa Hardy.

Years passed, and no one contacted Hardy about the fact that she lived in the home.

The home had in fact gone into the possession of the City of Indianapolis. But no one working at the city realized that there were occupants in the building.

But eventually, the City of Indianapolis put the home up for auction.

Hardy heard about this, and tried to bid for it. But the auction was abruptly canceled for unknown reasons. And then it went back to auction. And then the auction was canceled again.

But then the house went up for auction for a final time.

This time, the opening bid was out of Hardy’s budget. Eventually, a company in Singapore ended up purchasing the home.

Suddenly, Hardy’s future was uncertain. Would she finally be forced out of the building after almost a decade?

But then the company contacted Hardy with some good news. The company would allow Hardy to remain in the home. Naturally, they would want a monthly rental payment from her.

While the rental payment was annoying for Hardy, the upside of this deal was that now she could get the roof of the building fixed.

A video of Hardy’s story then appeared online, where it soon went viral. To date, it has gained over 5.1 million views.

It also has more than 43,000 likes and 11,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:

So Hardy managed to live rent-free for the best part of a decade, until the system finally caught up with her. She is clearly incredibly lucky. Imagine what you could do with a decade of rent/mortgage payments in the bank!
