Mom notices change in rescue dog’s attitude and instinctually checks on baby

Jenna Brousseau and her husband have always loved pets.
So, when they came across a rescue dog in their local animal shelter, they knew immediately they were taking him home.
They didn’t know he’d save someone.

Duke, the rescue dog, in a way owed the Brousseau family for taking him in and loving him like a proper family member.
Six years after he was adopted, the time came for him to repay the debt many times over.
He saved his baby sister’s life.

You see, six years after adopting Duke, the couple had a baby daughter, who Duke welcomed and immediately started to develop a strong bond with.
When the baby girl was nine weeks old, however, something really odd happened.
One night, as the couple was going to bed, the dog went into their room, hopped onto the bed, and started acting really weird.
He was alerting them to danger.

He was shaking so much that the Brousseaus’ were sure something was very wrong.
They had no idea what was up.
“He is insanely obedient, so this was extremely bizarre,” Jenna Brousseau told ABC News at the time.
Not knowing what caused this reaction, the couple tried to figure out what the issue was.
So, they decided to go check on their baby.

Indeed, the girl had stopped breathing.
The couple who lived in Portland, Connecticut, immediately called 911, and anxiously waited for the first responders to come.
Only minutes later, the paramedics arrived and revived the little girl.
The baby was then taken to the hospital, where she was found to be otherwise healthy.

The doctors that examined baby Harper were not sure what caused her to stop breathing, but they assumed it might have been because of acid reflux.
In other words, the stomach contents may have leaked backward into the esophagus causing the baby to stop breathing.
The family couldn’t be more grateful.
Their furry friend saved their baby’s life.

Had it not been for Duke’s extreme reaction, the couple said they would have just gone to sleep.
And that might have proved fatal.
According to the CDC, “each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) in the United States”.
One of the most common types of SUID is SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Although SIDS can happen to any infant, it seems that it is more common among babies who were born early and those having a low birth weight.
Still, SIDS can be prevented by making sure to place the baby on their back when they are put to sleep, by not adding anything in their cots (blankets, pillows, toys), and by keeping the baby’s cot inside the parents’ room for at least the first six months after birth.

Harper was one of the lucky babies to be saved from SIDS thanks to her canine brother.
Duke is indeed a good boy!
