Woman pays for single dad's groceries after card is repeatedly declined

Sometimes we do things because a strong invisible force tells us to do it. We can’t explain it. Words fail when we try. But it’s there and it’s something that can’t simply be ignored.

That’s the feeling one mom got when she was in the grocery store one night and witnessed a single dad struggling to purchase groceries for him and his two children.

The thing is, we have all been there before. We swipe our cards but for some reason, the card gets declined. This is nothing new and no one should feel embarrassed by it. Still, how many times has someone stepped in and offered to pay for our items?

This is the action that sets this story apart from others. Sara Fleming is a Christian woman. She’s also a mother and a wife. Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she is a woman of compassion.

It was shortly after Thanksgiving when Fleming found herself in line at an empty grocery store behind a man who was unable to purchase his food items. Fleming watched as the cashier put “cans of tuna, boxes of pasta, bananas, and apples under the counter.”

In a post she shared on Facebook, Fleming detailed what happened that night at the grocery store. She was so overcome with the experience as she felt that it was a message from God himself.

It was 10 pm and the man was attempting to pay the $94.10 total. However, no matter how many groceries the cashier put away, he simply didn’t have enough. To make matters worse, he was with his pre-teen daughter and young son, who looked on in embarrassment.

Fleming was waiting patiently when she felt the gentle shove that told her she needed to do something to help the family.

“It was like a gentle shove on the back and a mild electric shock to my heart. Pay for these groceries. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the money…I’ll provide. Trust Me. I heard God loud and clear. I started to open my mouth…but what if I embarrass his family even more? That still small voice called again. Another shove. Stronger this time. ‘I’ve got it,’ I blurted out loudly, as heat flooded my face.”

Those three words were all it took to set what would come later on in motion.

The family looked at Fleming in disbelief. Even the cashier asked her if she was certain that she wanted to pay for all of their items. But she was sure and she was adamant.

Of course, her actions touched the man. He began to cry.

“I’m a single dad. It’s so hard,” he said.

Fleming hugged him and his children. And when she got back to her car, she cried.

However, the story doesn’t end there. On February 23, she and her family were sitting in church. Just before the pastor began his sermon, she looked to her left and saw the man and his two children at the end of the pew.

Oddly, there was no one else in their row. It was just the two families. Fleming’s stomach dropped and she felt goosebumps. Again, she began to cry.

“I never told him I was a Christian. I never even told him where I went to church. I just obeyed God. The same One who brought this dad and his family to my church that Sunday.”
