Choosing the right onions to use in your French Onion Soup is very important because you want to get the right taste that you want to achieve.

According to Shelly, there are basically 4 types of onions to be familiarized with.

Choose white onions if you are aiming to get that strong onion flavor in your soup- plus, these types of onions caramelize perfectly!

Red onions, on the other hand, are milder and will give your dish that slightly sweet flavor. However, don’t be surprised if your soup gets that subtle purple color.

Vidalia onions are the best option for those who love their French Onion Soup sweet. For Shelly, her personal favorite is using Yellow Onions because they have the perfect flavor for her. It’s not too sweet and a bit milder as well.

You can also try to match different types of onions until you find the best combination that you will love.

Use a slow cooker if you’re busy- this way, you can just leave it for there to cook.

If you have a large number of guests, or you’re not in the mood to stay long hours in the kitchen, then your best bet is your trusted slow cooker.

If you love savoring your recipe and if you have the time, then you can definitely use your stove-top. In fact, you’ll achieve amazing caramelizing results when you use your stove-top for your French Onion soup, plus it cooks faster. You just have to remember that you need to constantly monitor it.

If you love cheese, then read this:

Love cheese? Then, pay attention. Adding cheese is optional, and it’s basically up to you.

According to Shelly, any type of cheese will do, but for her, the best cheese she can recommend is Gruyere cheese. The reason she chose this one is that it melts perfectly, giving it a flawless look and taste.

You can also use Mozarella, Parmesan, and even Swiss cheese. Try to combine some of them and see what you will achieve.
