Frustrated mom puts teen's things in trash bags after refusing to clean room

Parents have different parenting styles. Some parents are more strict than others, implementing punishments for every offense their children commit. There are parents who are more understanding. Others choose to be creative when it comes to disciplining their kids.

Alice Velasquez, a mom from Indiana, is just like most moms.

Her most common problem with her teenage girls is tidiness. For some reason, they just can’t keep their rooms clean, particularly Tahlia.

No matter how many times she reminds her daughter, the result is still the same. Food, clothes, and electronics are scattered all around, forcing her to do the work and clean up after her.

One day, Alice felt she’s had enough.

She knew she had to do something to correct her daughter’s bad habit and she came up with a pretty clever plan.

Alice gathered a few garbage bags and went around the house.

She started collecting Tahlia’s things. This included makeup products, books, clothes, supplies, and trash. Even the gears she uses for her soccer games were placed in the bags.

Alice didn’t sort them out. She just placed everything in the bags, tied them up, and placed them in a corner. She put a little note telling her daughter how she can get the bags back.

When Tahlia went home, she was shocked.

Her room was definitely cleaner because there was no trash or clothes on the floor. The catch was that everything was put away in trash bags.

Apart from having all her things in garbage bags, she also had to buy the bags for $25 each. The challenging part was that there’s no way to know what’s in each bag because her mom didn’t sort her things out.

No outside money was allowed.

Tahlia had to do household chores to earn money because it’s the only way she could get back her things. She’s not allowed to use the money from her allowance or other means.

Thinking it was a good idea to share her method with other moms, Alice posted everything on social media.

The post went viral and she got different responses. Other parents applauded her for her method and thought that it was quite creative of her. They even told her that they would be copying the same method and try it out with their kids.

Some parents, on the other hand, called her abusive. For them, what she did was a form of punishment

Because the post went viral, Alice was invited as a guest on a show called The Doctors.

The show’s psychotherapist, Stacy Kaiser, explained that Alice didn’t abuse or neglected her children. For her, it was actually a good and creative way to regain control of her household.

There were positive effects Alice didn’t saw coming.

Her youngest sons reached out to her and asked if they could help their sister buy the bags back. They were willing to do some household chores to help them out.

Knowing that their rooms were clean, the kids carefully reasoned out that they knew they weren’t in trouble. All they wanted was to help their sisters out.

In the end, Alice wasn’t just able to teach her young girls a lesson about tidiness and responsibility. She was also able to bring out that strong love and care from the siblings.
