Mom sticks sign on daughter's back when out in public - its message stops strangers' judgments
It is true that we have to be aware of the preventive measures against COVID-19. Maintaining social distancing, staying home, you name it. One thing is for sure – we have to follow them.
It is a good thing that many of us obey these precautionary measures. But then, let’s admit it, some rules are also a bit burdensome for many people. Who doesn’t want to stay at home and protect themselves, right? Sad to say, even though they badly want to follow these rules – they just can’t because of their valid reasons.
What’s more saddening is – instead of getting help and compassion from other people, what they get are unsolicited judgments.
Good thing, this mom is brave enough to avoid this nerve-wracking scenario.
Visiting grocery stores is one of the most common errands that we do, but it has become a challenging task because of the pandemic. There are a lot of things to keep in mind when you do this nowadays.
Some stores have implemented strict guidelines when shopping such as asking for identification cards for those who appear below 16 years old as children under 16 are not allowed inside the grocery shop.
Leaving the kids at home is one of the stern rules – which is pretty much easy for some, but not for single moms like MaryAnn Fausey Resendez, 41.
She certainly knew what she will go through as she brings her daughter to the grocery store.
So she came up with an idea to avoid strangers from shaming her.
She made a sign where she wrote a compelling message to judgemental strangers and she put it on the back of her daughter.
The sign reads:
“I am only five. I can’t stay home alone so I have to buy groceries with mommy. Before you start judging, stay back six feet.”
Clearly, she is not disobedient. She just had no choice but to bring her kid with her while buying essentials. Because as a mother, leaving your child alone at home especially a 5-year-old will be your last choice.
No matter what the reason is, mom-shamers and judgemental people will always have something to say – which is disheartening.
MaryAnn is aware of that – and that is the main reason why she decided to put a sign on her daughter’s back.
“The sign I made her wear cuz I just know some dumba** will take a picture & talk s**t on social media not knowing all the facts,” she wrote on her Facebook post.
Her post has reached thousands of people leaving it with 43,000 shares as of this writing. Not only that, but some parents also agreed and understood her situation.
“People should mind their own business. Your solution was elegant,” one commenter wrote.
Another mom even said, “Brilliant idea. You’re a good, caring mom. Always do what you know is right in your heart – MOM KNOWS BEST. This quarantine is a very difficult time to navigate life as a single parent of a young child…your idea is a homerun! Stay well. And btw your daughter is adorable! – A NY mom”
This challenging situation is also being experienced by other mothers too. Dionne Angus posted on Twitter and expressed her outrage against a grocery store.
“My daughter tried to go shopping today with her 5-year-old daughter but was told she couldn’t go in with her daughter. She’s a single mother. What is she supposed to do with her? I am beyond angry.”
Moreover, MaryAnn also posted numerous steps that she does when going out to make sure about her daughter’s safety.

What we are going through right now is not easy. Each one of us has own struggles and sacrifices. We just have to be more compassionate and respect other people’s situations.
