Man locates biological mom after 20 years and finds out they work in the same hospital

After 20 years apart, a man from Utah was reunited with his biological mother after she messaged him on Facebook on his birthday in November of last year.
20-year-old Benjamin Hulleberg, a middle school substitute teacher, was aware of his adoption from an early age. His adoptive parents are Brian and Angela Hulleberg. His biological mother, who he only knew as “Holly,” was someone he grew up longing to meet.
Benjamin had always wanted to meet his mom.
“It was always a very positive conversation,” Benjamin shared. “It was my parents either expressing gratitude for Holly or me talking about how I’m grateful for her and how I want to meet her one day.”
The baby boy the 36-year-old Holly Shearer gave up for adoption on Thanksgiving Day in 1998 still occupies so much of her thoughts.
The feelings were pretty much mutual.
When she gave birth to Benjamin, she was just 15 years old—too young to take on the responsibility.
She received letters and pictures for three years from the boy’s adoptive parents.
But then the updates stopped.
The adoption agency also closed down in 2014 so Holly lost all connections to her son.
So she used a search engine to locate Benjamin’s social media profile. When Holly discovered him, he was 18 years old, but she was hesitant to reach out.
She was scared to disturb Benjamin’s good life.
“He had so much going on his life. The last thing I wanted to do is to throw a wrench in his life. So I just watched from a distance,” she recalled.
Benjamin didn’t know Holly had already located him despite years of talking about attempting to track her down with his parents. In an effort to track out his birth mother, he tried everything—he wrote letters, registered with an adoption registry, and even had a DNA test done.
Benjamin had tried everything to find his mom.
Holly eventually had the guts to send Benjamin a message on his 20th birthday, two years after she first saw him online.
“I can remember the exact place that I was at when I got the message. I was at work. I was a machine operator and I remember I was in machine No. 15,” Benjamin recalled of that fateful day.
Benjamin was shocked.
Benjamin said how the words struck when Holly texted him back and disclosed who she was.
“I was crying. It was all very positive emotions,” he continued to recall. “But to me, this is a day I had been waiting for the past 20 years of my life and to imagine that it was finally happening was outrageous. It was a lot to take in.”
He wanted nothing but to meet her.
On November 21, 2021, Benjamin wanted to see Holly straight away, and the two of them enjoyed dinner with both of their families the next day.
When they first met, the mother and son sobbed and hugged one other tightly. It was just plain love.
It was a dream come true for Benjamin.
The two families talked for more than three hours. Additionally, Holly and Benjamin learned throughout the chat that they had both spent the previous two years working at St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Benjamin helps at the NICU, while Holly works as a medical assistant at The Heart Center.
Since then, Benjamin, who refers to Holly as “mom,” has gotten along together with his younger half-brother and half-sister. He also makes an effort to see Holly at least once a week at her workplace.
We are overjoyed to see this mother and son together again. They are now as complete as they can be!
