Mom’s viral tip to quickly find your kid if they get lost in public is working for others

Raising kids is a difficult and joyous undertaking. We have so many hopes and dreams for our kids and all we want is for them to grow up healthy, happy, and wise. It seems that the older they get, the more they drift away. That is why we keep them close while they are little, protecting them as much as we can.

One TikToker has a tip for parents to help them easily find their kids if they become lost in public.

Most parents have had that sense of panic and fear that sets in when they temporarily lose sight of their child in a crowded area. Frantically searching, relief often floods in as we realize that their kid is simply crouched down out of sight or has only wandered away.

But that is not always the case.

In many cases, you might silently search for your child, tears welling in your eyes.

In extreme cases, they might truly be lost, along with the over 2,000 other children that get lost every day in public places in the U.S. It is at this point that you notify the authorities and they are hopefully found.

A better technique for finding your missing child

One mom on TikTok has a better method for finding your child when they become lost in public. TikTok user Jess Cakmakli says that to find your child quicker when they get lots you should never silently search. Instead, she gives a technique that she says works great.

It probably happens more than you think

“It happens all the time. It takes two seconds for a kid to get distracted and walk away,” Jess told Insider.

For Jess, the solution is simple, search loudly as opposed to searching quietly, She guarantees you will get much better results and might even prevent your child from getting kidnapped.

How the technique works

Using her technique, Jess says parents should shout their child’s description as they search. She even gives an example in a TikTok video, stating:

“I’m looking for a boy, age 5, short brown hair, brown eyes, Caucasian, red Nike T-shirt, black shorts.”

Jess had come across the technique years before on a Facebook parenting group.

Ever since then it had stuck with her. The reason this technique works so well is pretty simple: exposure.

First off, it gets everyone around you involved in the search for your missing child. The fact that you are calling out your child’s details loudly can also dissuade a kidnapper and they might give up on their attempt to snatch your child.

And Jess says you shouldn’t feel guilty about using this technique when your child does go missing. The alternative could be much worse and it is worth any potential embarrassment you might feel.

As Jess so eloquently points out:

“That’s your best-case scenario: You look stupid and your kid is right there and you just go home. But if it’s the worst-case scenario, you just saved your kid’s life.”

And Jess’ tip has worked, with many parents coming forth after she posted the TikTok video in November 2020 saying that her technique helped them find their kids much faster when they went missing.

One mom, in particular, used Jess, advice when her son became lost in a Kmart in Australia.

She was able to find her child in 10 minutes after calling out her son’s description. As it turned out, he was simply down another aisle and she was quickly reunited with him.
