Moms are getting glam by putting on makeup in the delivery room and reactions are mixed

Giving birth can be many things, but as many mothers will admit, it’s largely a waiting game until things kick into high gear. Moms might spend hours in labor and more than one will tell you that the time in between contractions can be…well, boring.

And while the delivery room is no place to criticize a woman’s choices, some new mom’s are drawing everything from anger to eye-rolls for posting photos of themselves applying makeup right before giving birth.

Call it our culture’s obsession with being Insta-ready, but these moms aren’t just slapping on some lip gloss. They’re doing some contouring and winged eyeliner! (We can’t even manage that under the best of circumstances!)

Of course, they’re not trying to pressure other women into looking their most glam while trying to deliver a baby, but plenty of people have chosen to take it that way. Commenters have argued that there’s already enough pressure on women to look their best all the time and pampering yourself while pushing out a baby is just one more way in which women are giving into this societal pressure.

But perhaps more surprising than the desire to doll up during delivery is the number of commenters who have supported the moms. They’ve pointed out that most of these women are just doing something that makes them feel comfortable. And they’re standing firm on the belief that moms have every right to be glam whenever they darn well please!

According to Bored Panda, a study from the Cosmetify platform revealed that 64% of women aged 18 to 31 get beauty treatments before going into labor. And what’s wrong with that? Too many people assume that getting beautified means you care what others think – they seem incapable of realizing that it’s about self-empowerment and confidence.

What treatments are they getting? Well, 65% get hair removal, 57% get a manicure, 43% get a pedicure (perhaps in the hopes of seeing their feet for the first time in months!), 37% get a spray tan, and 32% get some sort of hair styling such as a blowout or cut.

There are all sorts of reasons women do this. 22% just wanted to avoid looking as tired and drained as they felt.

And should you have a problem with the makeup thing, you might want to leave the new mom alone while she’s still in the hospital because looking presentable for visitors was the reason 26% of women felt concerned about their appearance following childbirth.

Of course, there is a social media angle to this as well since 31% of women were concerned with looking good in photos.

Plenty of moms understood this pressure, especially since there are often family and friends around who think a photo of the moment is going to be something you want to show people later.

In many cases, makeup was simply a distraction from labor. And while there will always be someone who takes it too far, most women are just looking for anything to keep their mind off the pain.

If you want to support new moms, it’s probably best to avoid criticizing the decisions they make while they’re actually giving birth.
