Man snaps surreal photos of moose mom and her twins in his backyard

“The view outside my Covid home office is better than yours today,” Roland Rydstrom bragged to his Facebook friends back in June.

But he wasn’t shocked to see a moose family in his backyard. His neighborhood is part of a “loop” they travel relatively undisturbed up in Anchorage, Alaska.

He was, however, surprised that they stuck around as long as they did.

“I sat down to work, and fully expected the moose to walk away and they didn’t,” Rydstrom told The Dodo. “They would just change positions and, as you can tell from the pictures, they just kind of moved around to meet the sun — the babies in particular.”

People not used to seeing moose were mesmerized by the photos accompanying his post – in fact, it has been shared over 112k times since June 2nd.

The real draw was the set of moose twins born about 12 days before the photo was taken. They were hanging out with mom in the yard looking pretty cute.

“They arrived a bit before 9 am and except for two quick trips around the neighborhood, they’ve been camped out here all day,” he said of the family.

Now, female moose can weigh up to 790 pounds, so while they might be a common sight, it doesn’t mean everyone is excited to see them, especially when they show up with gangly babies that are 40-pounds of pure disrespect for people’s property.

Nature is beautiful and all, but you have to like it when it chews on your furniture.

There was also a great flowerpot disaster, after which Rydstrom assured readers that the marigolds lived.

“And we did rebuild — after the moose left the yard, I was able to return to the scene of the crime to return the marigold pot to its rightful place. The sociopathic, marigold-hating baby moose loses this round.”

Since no one is going to tell a moose not to come back, the family returned to the yard a week later, at which point everyone got to see them get a little bit bigger.

Rystrom figures he must just have good grass for lounging on.

Of course, Rydstrom couldn’t have guessed that his photos would be shared around the world. He edited his post to thank everyone for the attention and kind comments.

“Edit: Thanks to all who’ve shared these moose pictures. When I posted these Tuesday, I didn’t expect them to get shared throughout the world, except from my own friends. But people love moose, so… 😂”

No matter how much you love wild animals, it’s important to take a page from Rystrom’s book when dealing with something like a moose, especially a protective mother.

They can inflict some serious damage if they want to.

But the Alaskan knew this and took all of the photos from his window with his iPhone X.

“We do know these are wild animals,” Rydstrom said in his interview with The Dodo. “Especially with a mom and her babies, we would always respect their space and give them space to lounge as they did.”

Rystrom even told The Dodo that another moose mother and her babies ran through the yard the day he first spotted them. The original trio then chased after them in what he called “an action-packed day.”
