Most new parents love showing off their babies online. This meerkat mother is no different.

When Yam Yam, an eight-year-old meerkat who lives in Miami Zoo, gave birth in January 2020, it was a huge cause for celebration. No other meerkat had ever given birth in Miami Zoo before.

As the days and weeks went by, both of the meerkat puppies developed healthily. Everyone was amazed. Yam Yam herself has been quick to show love to her babies, as the photos prove.

In the weeks following the birth, Miami Zoo has released a range of photos showing off Yam Yam and her babies.

In all of them, the mother looks proud to have her babies in the world, and the babies look so pleased to have a mother to cuddle up to.

In fact, they’re a lot like human baby photos. They’re just a little more furry!

The babies are becoming even more independent every day. They have already started exploring their den and are looking forward to their lives in the zoo.

The staff members of the zoo have been keeping an eye on the babies. So far, Yam Yam and the males in the meerkat enclosure (any of whom could be the father) have all been treating the newborns well. It looks like this will continue until they reach adulthood.

When the meerkats do grow up, they will still be close with their mother and other inhabitants of the enclosure. That’s because meerkats are social animals who stick together.

The adult male meerkats will have a very involved role in raising the babies.

They will play with them, teach them to forage and show them how to look out for danger (although there is little danger in the enclosure, of course.)

In the wild, when mothers go foraging, other meerkats babysit their babies. How amazing is that?

This was the first time that a meerkat had given birth in the zoo since it opened 72 years ago. The staff members at the zoo are incredibly pleased to have brought the animals in the world. Who knows, perhaps many more pups will follow these two in the future?

And if you really want to see these meerkats puppies without traveling all the way to Miami, then there’s good news. There’s a live webcam of the meerkats’ enclosure. Sometimes the meerkats are scampering about. Other times, they’ve burrowed away. You just have to keep an eye out for them!

Even though the name suggests that meerkats are related to cats, they’re actually a type of mongoose. It’s less cute to think of meerkats as mongooses, but as Shakespeare said, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Another great thing about meerkats is that, unlike many animals, they are thriving in the wild. In fact, National Geographic states that their population trends are stable. That’s great news for anyone who loves these animals!
