Like humans, many animals protect and provide for their young. In fact, many people would suggest not interacting with an animal’s newborn because of the risks that it brings.

While there are certain species known for protecting their young, like elephants and dolphins, there are several others who are willing to stop at nothing to protect them.

Just ask anyone who has approached a deer when the mama is nearby. Things can get ugly pretty quick.

Sometimes, however, if an animal is in desperate need to save their baby from harm, they will go to any length to do so. Even if that means going to a human for help.

One cow in Millbrook, Ontario did just that when her newborn calf became stranded on the other side of the fence just after his birth.

It all began when a man named Dave was passing by and pulled his car over to capture video of the cows grazing near a pond. He approached the fence with one camera in hand and setting the other on a fence post.

As he filmed, he noticed one cow to his left appeared agitated. The cow had a tag on its ear that read “Flo.” At the time, Dave didn’t think much of it. He assumed she was simply annoyed by his presence.

But Flo wouldn’t go away. Instead, she stared at Dave and then turned her head to the fence as if she was using her head to point to something. She even began mooing and pawing the ground with her hooves. Unbeknownst to Dave, she was desperately trying to get his attention.

Her behavior caught the attention of the other cows who approached her, perhaps helping to draw attention to the dire situation.

Flo continued to look at Dave and the same spot near the fence. She paced back and forth while mooing. Still, it took Dave five minutes before realizing that she was seeking his help.

Slowly, Dave made his way to the fence and to his surprise, he saw a newborn calf outside of the fence on his side.

The calf wasn’t moving. Still, Dave cautiously approached it, not wanting to startle Flo. When he saw that the calf was alive, he carefully began trying to get the calf on the other side.

Dave saw that the calf’s umbilical cord was still attached. He had just been born.

Dave spoke to Flo in a calm voice while using a stick to move the fence out of the way to help nudge the newborn under it. The fence was electric but was set to a low voltage so neither would be severely hurt.

Flo relaxed noticeably as she watched Dave try and move the calf towards her. Eventually, Dave succeeds and the calf is reunited with his mother. Flo licks her calf and leads him away for nursing.

Before Dave leaves, he visits the farmers who had to run an errand when the incident occurred. They were beyond grateful for Dave’s help and offered to let him meet the cows properly.

Surprisingly, when he did, the calf approached him as if he remembered their encounter. Flo also approached Dave and seemed to acknowledge his help with a soft and long stare.

She then follows her calf off into the meadow.
