Mother cow pleads to man to help save her newborn calf
It’s a joyous occasion when a mother gives birth. She’s so excited about meeting her baby face-to-face for the first time.
And this mother cow, Flo, was happy to finally meet her baby in the flesh.
But there’s one problem.
She gave birth by the fence, an electric fence, and now she can’t get to her baby. The fence was put up to keep the cows from wandering to the highway. It’s also a good way to keep predators out.
Flo didn’t know what to do. She needed to get to her baby and she needed to nurse her baby.
Thankfully, one of the farm’s neighbors, Dave, stopped by.
He wanted to film the cows splashing and bathing in the pond when he noticed Flo agitated by the side, between the pond and the fence.
She kept glancing at Dave as if she was trying to tell him something. But Dave didn’t understand.
He thought he was getting too close and this annoyed Flo.
He didn’t know much about cattle behavior and did not know that Flo was sending him signs for help.
Flo looked at the fence and back at Dave.
She kept digging at the ground with her foot and crying out loud. Dave finally got the hint when the other cows came nearer and Flo continued to pace and cry for the next five minutes.
Flo glanced at the same spot again and Dave decided to check out what was going on there. That’s when he discovered what was happening.
Flo was asking for help.
When Dave arrived at the spot, he saw a newborn calf on the other side of the fence. The calf was lying still and he didn’t know if the calf was still alive or already dead. He stepped closer and found out the calf was alive but was still too weak to stand.
Dave found a stick to lift the lower wires and helped return the calf back to Flo.
Flo realized what Dave was doing and her cries changed. She waited patiently as Dave and her calf did their best to get the calf to the opposite side.
They did get shocked by accidentally touching the fence, which worried Dave because the calf might cry out and anger Flo.
But the calf didn’t cry and Flo seemed to understand it was going to happen.
Finally, the mother and calf were reunited with Flo showering her calf with licks. She glanced back at Dave with a look that thanked him for helping them. Flo led her calf towards the meadow so the mother could nurse her baby.
Dave was also walking away when the farmers arrived and he was able to relay the good news.
When Dave came back to the meadow later that day, he saw Flo and her calf once again. And the calf looked at Dave and recognized him from the rescue earlier that day. Even Flo, who was close by, recognized Dave also.
Dave filmed the entire scene because he wanted to show a cow’s capacity for emotion.
And he also wanted to show that cows had an innate sense to reach out for help when needed.
“We don’t give cows enough credit. They are far more complex than some people believe, and they are far more deserving of a life of happiness,” Rumble wrote about the video.
