Mother and daughter pair create spectacular 3D chalk art to put smiles on people's faces

A lot of artists are finding more free-time to hone their craft during this quarantine. It almost feels like the much-needed free time many introverts never thought they needed (who’s kidding, we probably always knew we needed more free time).

This mother and daughter duo, Jan and Olivia Riggins, are part of the art crowd as well. Their specialty is chalk art, with sidewalks and concrete surfaces as their canvas.

When Covid-19 came knocking on our doors forcing us into quarantine, Jan had to make do with the pavements and walls of her own home.

1. From the deep blue to the concrete jungle

First on the list is this astonishingly good Great White Shark illustration. It’s a wonderful piece depicting a beautiful and misunderstood animal.

2. Fuzzy and buzzy

Everyone’s favorite pollinator gets a stellar representation in chalk! Being able to render all the fuzzy little hairs on the bee with chalk, and being able to achieve the 3-dimensional look with those clever shadows and highlights is masterful work.

3. Swimming and crawling

With the magic of soft pastel chalk, Jan manages to make a concrete sidewalk look like its own Koi pond. The perspective and shadows making them look like they’re actually in the water is only possible with years of practice and technique. The amazing arachnid on the right is wonderfully drawn too!

4. Wings on the wall

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_-5yiznAv6/

Using a dark grey chalk to render the shadows beneath the wings, this is one convincing illusion. Imagine driving by and seeing this in the corner of your eye! Ever wonder if we’d still find butterflies cute if they were this huge?

5. A teenager has been bitten by a radioactive spider in LEGO City

With great chalk comes great creativity! Some of you geekier folk reading this will recognize that this represents a LEGO minifigure version of MCU Spider-Man, as you can tell from the distinct black accent stripes. Furthermore, we love that she decided to do a LEGO piece. Extra nerd points for that!

6. Chalk illustrating is a complicated profession

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-veVvcHpIi/

Everyone’s favorite baby from The Mandalorian gets a marvelous portrait in chalk! Its actual name may be “The Child” according to those working on the show, but it’s been deeply cemented into our heads with the name “Baby Yoda” by now. Nonetheless, this chalk drawing captures his charm really well. This is the way.

7. Amazing artwork all about an amphibian

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_8v-2SneBG/

While many frog species are toxic to the touch, it’s hard to deny they are a lovely group of amphibians. If we ID’d this one correctly, this seems to be the Strawberry Poison dart frog, Oophaga pumilio. This one is just artwork, but probably don’t touch any colorful frogs you see, no matter how cute they might look.

8. Orca on the sidewalk

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-a1ap6neK3/

Posing with this street Orca is Olivia, and my goodness are the values and highlights on this Orca top notch! You’ll find marine life is a common trend with their chalk drawings. The Orca’s scientific name is Orcinus orca, and it belongs to the Delphinidae.

9. Mom says it’s my turn to draw the Xbox

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_LVgIRnk10/

The ever popular competitor to the Playstation gets a wonderful chalk rendering of its controller. This one is one of their most impressive ones yet. Look how real it looks! You can nearly reach out and touch it.

10. A sea turtle for the streets

Evidently, Jan loves drawing marine animals. This Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is rendered beautifully and looks to be swimming right towards you! Like many sea turtle species, Green Sea Turtle populations are endangered, but with enough action and people who care, it’s not too late at all to do something about it. Artwork like Jan’s is helping to make more people aware of this too!

11. A tremendous three horned beetle

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_lkHEwnadL/

You may have seen this beetle species hundreds of times in books and nature programs, however, you might not have known what it was called. This is the Moellenkampi beetle, Chalcosoma moellenkampi. Although it’s indeed also just known as the three-horned beetle.

12. Everyone’s favorite big, grey mammal

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_dVq4DnPVR/

In addition to the marine animals, Jan has also done chalk renderings of land-dwelling animals too. She made this elephant for her mother in-law. Another example of her skill with shadows and detail is the phenomenal way she’s done the creases in the skin.

We’d like to thank Jan and Olivia for sharing these wonderful pieces of artwork on Instagram. Seeing creative people get to work on beautiful projects like this makes quarantine a lot easier. In fact, there’s nothing stopping the rest of us from picking up a pen or some brushes and having a bit of artistic fun too!

Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
