Mom and daughter duo build adorable 'laneway house' in mom's backyard
As our family grows, we end up needing more space. Buying a bigger house is not always an option, that’s why laneway houses are great options for families.
What is a laneway house?
Laneway houses are built as secondary homes. They are mostly built in backyard lots; that is the reason why most laneway houses are small, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t functional.
As they are small and practical, more and more families opt to choose laneway houses. They are commonly found in the densely populated areas of Vancouver, Toronto, and Edmonton.
With their extra space in their backyard, a mother and her daughter decided to design their own Laneway house.
The results were astonishing!
This Quintessential Laneway Home was designed by the mother and daughter duo, Jacek and Anna. It was then built by Smallworks, a company that promises to provide the best results to satisfy its customers.
According to Jake Fry, founder of Smallworks:
โMy desire in starting Smallworks was to build simple, elegant modern homes which, with basic maintenance, would look as good a generation after they were built as when they were new.โ
The starting plan is to work on a 620-square-feet vacant lot in the family’s backyard.
The design focuses on space and functionality. Their aim was to give life to the design made by the mother-daughter duo.
โThis is the quintessential Laneway House. It possesses all the elements fundamental to a small home. The house is liberal with its floor plan, with a focus on single-level living. It has one bedroom, a large open space for living, dining, and cooking, and a smaller workroom,โ Smallworks posted on their portfolio.
As you step inside the tiny home’s doorway, you will see a tiled entryway and foyer.
The washer and dryer are located at the end of the hallway. You will also notice the clean and neat decor that matches the white paint.
As you enter the tiny home, you will be greeted into the home’s modern kitchen. The kitchen appliances and interiors match the stunning hardwood floors.
You would be surprised to see that they have everything they need inside the kitchen.
It has white cabinets, stainless appliances, and a kitchen island.
It’s even large enough to accommodate family and friends. You wouldn’t even feel that you’re in a laneway home. The lighting of the kitchen is also very nice, and we love how natural light comes in even though it’s situated in the backyard.
Seeing the photo of the kitchen, you would think you are looking at a magazine photo.
After the kitchen, you will already see the dining and sitting area. The lounge and seating area are quite spacious as well; the way the ceiling was designed aims to give the illusion of a bigger space. Plus, with natural light coming in, the ambiance of this tiny home is perfect for relaxation.
It also has one bedroom complete with bedside tables and one bathroom.
If you think this is laneway home is already amazing, wait till you see the deck! It has a patio table and chairs.
Overall, this home is simple but very functional. Each space has been thought off, and even if it’s a tiny laneway home, everything that you will ever need is there.
