Mother-daughter duo make history when they graduate from medical school together
Like mother like daughter or so they say!
For this mother-daughter duo, the apple didnât fall far from the tree.
A young woman named Cynthia Kudji jad always wanted to be a doctor, but it seemed like her dream was falling apart when she got pregnant at the age of 23.
Her daughter Jasmine was born, and Cynthia settled on becoming a nurse.
Cynthia still wanted to be a doctor, she just knew it wasnât the right time. But she stuck to her dream.
Cynthia worked as a nurse for a decade, all the while raising her beautiful daughter to love medicine as well.
Jasmine realized that she wanted to be a doctor as well, and Cynthia decided it was time to try and fulfill her dream.
But they couldnât get into the same school.
Reported by Inspire More, âJasmine attended LSU School of Medicine in Louisiana, while Cynthia studied at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts, finishing her degree at the Maine campus.â
The duo had not spent much time apart at all in their lives, so they knew that this would be exceptionally hard.
Jasmine mentioned to UMHS, âI think initially it was difficult because my mom and I have always been really close so I had to get used to the distance, we had to learn how to FaceTime and Skype each other, so we were Skyping each other every day and whenever I had struggles and she had struggles, we just had to learn to communicate from a distance, but I think over time we figured it out.â
They figured it out and both graduated from the different universities. Cynthia graduated with an M.D. in Family Medicine, and Jasmine finished with an M.D. in General Surgery.
The journey was a major part of the reward in this instance.
âI always tell people we laugh together, we study together, we cry together,â Jasmine told UMHS. âI think medical school is one of those experiences that you donât truly understand until youâre in it. Sometimes people struggle to find someone who relates to their struggles, so for that person to be my mom was extremely helpful.â
Their story gets better and better.
They had worked apart for so long that it was a relief when they realized they were both going to LSU Health in order to finish up their residency.
On Match Day, they learned the news of the partnership at LSU. Match day is when different medical school grads are informed of the hospital they will be working at.
Cynthia and Jasmine became the first mother-daughter duo to graduate from medical school and the first to match at the same hospital.
What a big inspiration to us all!
No matter how big your dream seems, you can still complete it. Just like Cynthia never gave up, you have to persevere.
It will take hard work, dedication, and a bunch of hours pushing towards the goal, but it will be so rewarding when you achieve what youâve worked for all this time.
