Mother and daughter play “River Flows In You” in amazing street performance that wows the crowd

It’s been just over a month but Karolina Protsenko’s video of a street performance with her mother has already been viewed by millions.

At just 11 years old, Protsenko is already an accomplished violinist. She was born in Ukraine to a family of musicians, which is why the performance with her mother on the keyboard is so special.

According to her website, the pre-teen moved to the United States with her piano-playing mother and guitar-playing father in 2008 when she was just 6 years old. That’s also when she started violin lessons.

Protsenko’s videos have been seen far and wide since the classically-trained musician started busking in her adopted hometown of Santa Monica, CA in the summer of 2017. Now, she has 3 YouTube channels and is on Facebook and Instagram with an audience of over 5 million followers in 50 different countries around the world.

With over 500 million total views of her performances (so far!), she’s also been featured on The Ellen Show.

Her latest video is a performance of South Korean-British composer and musician Lee Ru-ma’s (aka Yiruma) 2001 piano piece “River Flows in You.” Because the song was featured in the teen vampiref lick “Twilight” it’s reached both pop and classical audiences and is his best-known work to date thanks to its downloads on Spotify from the soundtrack.

But Protsenko and her mother Ella are set to make the tune famous again with their October 2019 performance.

The duo set up on the street with a sound system to amplify the violin, drawing a crowd from the surrounding area. And watching the 11-year-old play is truly something to behold.

In fact, she captivated not just YouTube viewers but everyone on the street that day as they filmed and enjoyed her performance.

But just because the young musician is classically trained doesn’t mean she confines her song choices to classical melodies. In fact, over 5.8 million viewers have already seen her April 2019 violin performance of Luis Fonsi’s (ft. Daddy Yankee) “Despacito” on YouTube, which she performed solo.

But the collaboration with her mother is what touched many viewers.

“Spectacular, I love the mother-daughter combo sharing in music…” said one commenter.

Another said:

“So beautifully performed. So nice to see Mother plus daughter playing together this wonderful music. A privilege to listen. Thank you so very much.”

And many commenters were even moved to reflect on their own relationships – both good and bad – with their families after watching the performance.

“I feel like crying, not because of the music, but because I see a mother and daughter united, playing together. My family has recently broken down. It’s heartbreaking.”

It’s clear that people are moved not only by the beauty of the music and the talent of the musicians but the passion with which Prostenko plays.

By the end of their performance, dozens more people had gathered round to hear the music and got quite a treat for stopping and taking it all in.
