Dog escapes kennel at shelter so she could comfort crying puppies that are not hers

As it turns out, a mother’s love is universal.

We often think that humans have a monopoly on caring instincts but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Animals, most especially mammals cannot fight the urge to nurture and protect younglings.

Surveillance footage showed not a crime or an accident, but how a mother raced to younger animals in need.

A mother dog cannot resist the urge to be a mother.

An Australian shepherd mix named Maggie was one of the dogs staying at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in Alberta, Canada.

As the night went on, the sound of puppies yelping roused her from sleep. A staff member narrated how much Maggie wanted to check on the puppies.

Alex Aldred said that the kennel gates have an opening where they slide water bowls through. Maggie pushed her water bowl out of the way and wriggled her way through.

Then, she followed where the puppy cries were coming from.

In the middle of one of the hallways, she found a litter of motherless puppies. In the surveillance video, you can see that she tried her best to comfort the little dogs.

When she realized that she can’t open the gate and can’t get access to the litter, she then pressed herself against the grate just so the puppies can feel her warmth and presence.

It turns out, they were a perfect match.

According to the dog hotel’s Facebook post, Maggie’s puppies were weaned from her at the shelter where she came from.

Meanwhile, the puppies named Kari and Hannah were weaned off from their mother as well when they got to the shelter.

Maggie and the puppies were staying at the same place at that time and when the puppies needed a mom, Maggie knew that she needed to be one even if the puppies were not hers.

The owners of the dog hotel were out that night.

They were having dinner when they were alerted about the movements on their property. Upon checking the surveillance video, they realized that Maggie got out of her kennel.

Sandy Aldred hurried back to the facility. She was greeted by an excited Maggie. Maybe the dog was hoping that Sandy could help her help the puppies. Sandy realized what was happening, however, and ended up not escorting Maggie back to her spot.

Instead, she unlocked the puppies’ kennel and led the mother dog inside.

“She was super affectionate with them,” Alex Aldred said to The Dodo. “She was mouthing them and they were kissing her chin. So we just decided to keep them together for the night.”

When morning came, the dogs were still snuggled up against each other like a true family. It was such a sight.

Maggie has since found a loving home. But she doesn’t have to worry about all of her kids because the puppies found their forever homes too! However, in that brief moment, we all know that the puppies will forever consider Maggie as their mother.

Watch how a mother dog escaped her kennel just so she could take care of puppies not even her own.
