Mathematician Shows How To Multiply Two Digit Numbers In Your Head
Playing with numbers often lead to amazing, if at times questionable, results. Math has resulted in technology and progress as we see it, so it is a necessary skill to learn.
In this day and age, everyone’s got a calculator in hand. But learning new tricks with numbers can be fun.
Plus it’s a great way of impressing your friends.
Here’s a quick way of multiplying 2 digit numbers up to 100.
Let’s exercise that brain a bit. What is 21 x 31?
Of course you got 651. You’ve got a calculator! And if you didn’t use one and just relied on the power in your head, then good for you!
Here’s tecmath with a cool trick on how to solve an equation without the need of a calculator.
Multiply the first two digits. So that is 2 x 3. Easy, that’s 6. Now put a space after 6 and multiply the last two digits which is 1 x 1. So you should be looking at 6_1. Got it?
Now look at how he gets the middle digit.
Multiply 1 x 2 and 1 x 3. Take those two answers, 2 and 3, and add them up to get 5. Which gives you 651.
Here’s another one.
He gives 43 x 21 = ?
No shame in it this time. Calculator or not, go ahead and see what you get. 903?
We take 4 from 43 and 2 from 21. So 4 x 2 = 8. Another blank space in between, then 3 from 43 and 1 from 21 gives 3 x 1 = 3.
Now it’s the same trick. 4 from 43 and 1 from 21 gives you 4. 3 from 43 and 2 from 21 is 3 x 2 = 6. You’ve got a 4 and a 6. Add them up and you get 10.
But you can’t put 10 in between 8_3.
Take the zero and stick it in between 8 and 3. Take 1 and add it to 8 to get 9 as shown in his example. There you go, 903.
A viewer named Jim C is really thankful.
“I’m 38 years old and not very good at math. I blame myself out of anyone for this. I’ve watched a few of your videos so far and have learned more in regards to math than the past 36 years of my education. You are making math fun for me. The only thing that is holding me back now is mental math and doing these in my head. I’m working on that though. Thank you!”
We should be too!
Tecmath has a third example. Pretty sure you’ve got the hang of it now but for the sake of learning, try this one out.
It is 42 x 63.
4 x 6 = 24 so take the answer and leave a space. Then 2 x 3 = 6 so we’ve got 24_6.
Once again, we multiply in the pattern he shared. 4 x 3 = 12 and 2 x 6 = 12. Add both so 12 + 12 = 24.
Put the 4 in the middle of 24_6, then add 2 to 4 to get 6. The final answer is 2,646.
I know what you’re thinking. Not everyone is good at math, and we’ve all got phones with calculators. But that’s the whole point to it. Why be ordinary when you can stand out?
Here are 3 more examples you can work on yourself. Get your kids or friends to try it with you!
