Musician plays Elvis ballad on kalimba for his dog – and the video melts millions of hearts

It may look like a birdhouse, but the instrument in this video is called a kalimba. The musician’s dog loves to hear it.

Maple is a music-loving golden retriever, which is lucky, as his owner, Trench, is a very talented multi-instrumentalist.

Trench loves to play songs for Maple whenever he has the chance. And the dog is so happy to hear him play.

One day, Trench came across an instrument he’d never played before, an African box called a kalimba or a mbira.

Trench knew he had to have it. When he brought it back home, he started playing a few pieces on it, and realized that Maple would love to hear it.

So Trench went out into the yard where Maple was playing and sat down with the kalimba. Maple knew a performance was coming, so he ran up to his owner.

Trench started playing the opening notes to Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love. The dog listened to it. It appeared to be soothing him. The tune did indeed sound very relaxing on the small instrument.

When Trench finished playing, Maple went up to him to congratulate him on his performance. The dog is clearly very happy to hear his owner make music.

Luckily, Trench was filming the entire thing. He then uploaded the footage to YouTube, where it soon went viral. To date, the video has gained over 20.2 million views. It also has more than 870,000 likes and 18,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:

This has since become Trench’s most popular video on YouTube. There’s just something about the combination of a beautiful song well played on an unconventional instrument in front of a dog that’s unbeatable!

But Trench and Maple have many other viral videos.

Their next most popular video has Trench playing George Michael’s Careless Whisper on an acoustic guitar. Maple is less feisty in this video.

He spends the entire performance sleeping in a corner. Trench’s performance does make for an amazing lullaby, to be fair. This performance has managed to gain almost 16 million views, which is still incredible!

Believe it or not, Maple has even joined in with the music on occasion.

For performances of numerous songs, such as Back in Black by AC/DC, Trench taught the dog how to play a drum in time to the beat. The dog looks over the moon to be contributing to his owner’s craft!

And just when you thought these videos couldn’t get better, they do. Trench recently adopted a second dog, Cherry, who also likes to listen to his owner’s performances.

Like Maple, Cherry also gets soothed by his owner’s music and often falls asleep during his performances. Maple and Cherry sure are two lucky dogs. How many dogs get to listen to amazing live music every single day?

But do dogs really like to listen to music? Research seems to suggest that they do, as long as it’s calming music.

for instance, the psychologist Deborah Wells of Queens University once performed an experiment where she played pop, metal and classical music to dogs in a shelter. She noted that pop music didn’t affect the dogs, but metal made them angrier and classical music had a calming effect. So now you know that if you want to make your dog happy, play calming music!
