Using glow-in-the-dark paint, Mythbusters show how germs spread so easily
“Mythbusters” was a staple show in the house that I grew up in. I can attribute much of my love for science to their crazy antics! They were influential for many in looking at the world from a data-driven perspective.
Amidst the coronavirus scare, they released footage of a test they did to see how germs spread!
Adam and Jamie, as always, designed a test to see the effects that a single individual can have on spreading viruses and germs. Adam is the guinea pig for this experiment, leaving Jamie to be the mad scientist behind the scenes!
Creating a unique mixture, they design an elaborate device that will pump liquid from Adam’s nose!
Jamie got to work creating a non-toxic, fluorescent fluid that is impossible to see with our naked eye but will glow bright orange when hit with a black light. They take Adam and strap him into a rig that has a small tube that is taped up to his nose. It slowly releases little drops that simulate Adam having a cold.
Getting to work, Adam goes about his typical day of building and putting things together.
After an hour, 60 milliliters of fluid have dripped onto Adam’s nose! When the black light hits the scene, it looks like a clown has been murdered. There is bright-colored liquid EVERYWHERE. In the process of building things, Adam has spread the dye onto literally every surface in the area.
Not satisfied with just one experiment, they decide to “throw a party” to see if the germs are transferrable.
The test is a simple dinner table with food. Around the table are three people who pretend germaphobes and three who have no idea what’s going on. As Adam eats and talks, we will see at the end whether there is a difference in the people who took extra precautions and those who didn’t. Adam even has makeup on to hide his dripping contraption! The three guests have no idea!
After an evening of cake, toast, and games, the results are shocking.
Looking like a “radioactive clown”, Adam is the first to step into the light. His results are expected and he lights up orange. One by one, each individual walks into view of the black light. The entire group (save one individual) has dye all over their hands, with some even showing up on their faces!
The entire table looks absolutely disgusting.
Aside from Kari, almost every surface in the experiment is covered in the orange fluid. Kari was incredibly careful to wipe down all of the surfaces that Adam touched and not touch anything that he did.
A good reminder for us during this season of quarantine.
This is a great example of how easily viruses can spread. While funny in this instance, imagine the effects of an individual who is out in public with no black lights and dye to save them? The amount of people that we come into contact with is pretty incredible. Make sure that you are staying safe and clean during the outbreak.
