Man risks his life and jumps out of bed naked to rescue a kitten from a dangerous python

Not every animal rescue is the same, and the following story is certainly a very special one for a number of reasons. First of all, it doesn’t happen all too often that a kitten has to be rescued from the clutches of an almost 6 feet long python. Second, the small feline’s rescuer wasn’t exactly dressed for the occasion, as the shocking screams of his wife woke him up early in the morning – still naked.

The man and brave rescuer, Nick Kearns from Kununurra, Australia, got out of bed naked to see what was going on.

The resident of Western Australia apparently didn’t hesitate for a second when he was woken up by the screaming sounds of his partner Karyn. He didn’t exactly take the time to dress and checked out what was going as soon as possible instead.

It turns out that there was some kind of situation going on in the garden, but we’re pretty sure that the man was quite shocked to see an almost 6 feet long and extremely dangerous Python snake. It’s not unthinkable in Australia, but still not something you see every day, of course.

“I jumped up — naked of course — and ran outside,” he said to ABC. “I just couldn’t unwrap it.”

He saw a tiny kitten, who they named Lil, in the clutches of the snake. It was completely helpless.

“I reckon I didn’t have very long — I could see the cat was starting to slow down a bit.”

“There was no way I was going to stand by and let it eat the kitten.”

Karyn then managed to grab the tail of the snake, even though she is absolutely terrified of them. In the meantime, Nick simply tried to free the kitten, “The Little One” or Lil for short, from the reptile’s mouth. Lil is pictured on the right in the picture below.

“I found the centre of the coil near where her head would have been and just put my hand in there and grabbed the head,” he recalls.

The two made a good team, and it didn’t take long before the kitten could escape the snake’s grip. However, right after the snake relaxed its grip, it bit Nick’s hand.

“It was only later on I noticed there was blood everywhere,” the man remembers. “It was all mine, from cuts and bites.”

Luckily, in the heat of the moment, it didn’t seem like Nick was in a lot of pain. In fact, the tetanus injection afterward and getting his skin scraped from falling over were both worse than the bite, he said.

Funnily enough, Nick actually went through a snake-handling course a couple of years prior to this incident. He immediately recognized it was a python and therefore non-venomous, but these snakes are still very dangerous because of their grip and sheer size. Aside from that, the bites still hurt, even if they don’t inject venom.

“I did think at the time it would be nice if part of the lesson had been how to rescue a kitten,” he said.

As for the kitten, he’s doing fine now but the four-footer is still spooked by the whole thing.

Nick says that he checks the house every single morning for snakes, just to prevent these things from happening again.

“They’re just doing their thing, it wasn’t actually anything against the snake,” he said. “But I’m just making sure we try and keep it as safe as we can.”

“If you grab the back of the head they can’t bite you,” he concluded. “The real lesson is ‘don’t let go’.”
