Woman has neighbor dogsit while on vacation and returns to unforgettable letter

It’s surreal to think that the most mundane thing can ripple into a life-changing event.

More so, one also cannot underestimate the power of having a pet and the kindness we give to one another.

This man performed a life-changing “favor”.

Reddit user u/SnooCupcakes8607 thought that they were asking a favor from a neighbor.

It would be soon revealed, however, that it was a mutual benefit none of them would ever forget.

It all began with a letter.

The Reddit user posted a letter they got from the mail after coming home from a vacation. They were gone for two weeks, which was a pretty long time.

To make sure that their pets Oreo, Smokey, and Jennifer will get the best care, they asked for help from their neighbor Robert.

The next two weeks went on without a hitch. And after returning from vacation, the Reddit user ended up with Robert’s letter.

It was a letter of gratitude.

The experience inspired a profound realization in Robert.

He began the letter by thanking the dogs’ owner. Then, he went on to tell them what the experience meant for him and how it affected his life for the better.

He’s isolated.

He said that he is an “old man” and because of that, no one in the neighborhood gets to see him as often anymore.

Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse in his isolation, Robert lost his father to colon cancer. After his father’s death, his isolation got worse.

He doesn’t have a wife or kid.

He said that he “could go to sleep one day and never wake up again”, and no one will ever know what happened.

But all of those things changed when he met the dogs.

He said that he’d spent every day just sitting around and wondering what he had done for the world. He had withdrawn at that point.

But because of a neighbor’s favor, his life changed a bit.

I went on a vacation 2 weeks ago, and let my neighbor babysit my pets. Shortly after I got back home, I received this letter from him in the mail that made me smile and cry. I’d like to share it here.

“Your pets are the cutest, funniest, and most troublesome individuals,” he said in the letter. But more than just dogsitting, he shared that his interactions with them helped him restart his life.

He hasn’t been outside for a long while but because he needed to walk the dogs, he found himself walking around the neighborhood.

He started waking up early again.

He began appreciating the things he hid from and he shared that the best part of his experience was when he took the dogs to the park.

For the first time after a long while, he talked to other people and made a few friends.

Because of the dogs, he got to reconnect with his community. Because of the dogs, he finally felt what it was like to be part of the human race.

“I realize I sound very existential right now, but I’m telling the truth,” he said in his letter, “It’s nice knowing that I’m doing something for someone, even if it’s my neighbor.”

After the dogsitting task, Robert did another amazing thing.

He also adopted two dogs.

He even apologized to his neighbor if they heard them barking and making pet noises.

In the end, this dogsitting task didn’t just save a life, but three in total.

Robert says that he has found new meaning in life and we agree with him when he said “that’s all that matters.”
