Coca-Cola and Carlsberg create plant-based bottles that degrade in a year
One of the blights in the world is the massive use of plastic that humans currently use. We create 359 metric tons of plastic each year globally. With plastic production increasing and the remaining plastic in the world sticking around in landfills for some time, is there a solution on the horizon?
Coca-Cola and Carlsberg are working on plant-based bottles.
A Dutch biochemical company named Avantium is working on a product for a new plant-based plastic equivalent bottle! This breakthrough would be staggering and drastically reduce pollution flooding the world.
With backing from some big-name companies, Avantium is making serious progress.

Companies like Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, and Danone are all looking to be a part of this plastic-free future! The finish line could mean serious profits for the company as well as a cleaner earth. If you are deciding between a plastic bottle and a bio-degradable bottle for a similar cost, most people would choose the bio-degradable one!
The new tech is plant-based!
The entire bottle is made from plant sugars! The three main ingredients include corn, wheat, and beet sugars. The bottles would hold liquids but would decompose after a year in a composter. Left in normal outdoor conditions, it would dissolve in a few years.
A normal plastic bottle takes quite a while to decompose.

Due to the long petroleum chains, plastic waste takes 1000 years to decompose and bottles can take up to 450 years. Thinking backwards, William the Conqueror could throw trash on the ground and we could still find it today.
One of the best features of this plastic is the lack of fossil fuels used in production.
More than just a decomposable bottle, this plastic doesn’t use any fossil fuels to produce. The goal is to get this new plastic on the shelves by 2023, not long from now! Myriam Shingleton of Carlsberg said:
We are pleased with the progress we’ve made on the Green Fiber Bottle so far. While we are not completely there yet, the two prototypes are an important step towards realizing our ultimate ambition of bringing this breakthrough to market.
Starting out, the company will produce 5,000 tons of decomposable plastic a year.

Expressing excitement with the future, Myriam continued:
“Innovation takes time and we will continue to collaborate with leading experts in order to overcome remaining technical challenges, just as we did with our plastic-reducing Snap Pack,” she continued.
As the company gets closer to production, there is sure to be more news.
These types of innovations bring the world closer to a cleaner future.
We all want a cleaner world for us and our kids. Thankfully, some people are taking the charge seriously and moving forward with these incredible products. As time passes, we will bring the world closer to a sustainable future!
We can all do something as we move closer to that future.
As new products come out, we can do out part by using and investing in them. We can also do the small things that add up across millions of people! Paper, plastic, or plant sugars?
