Newspaper delivery guy learns elderly customers scared to go outside – offers to delivery groceries too

COVID-19 news and constant talk about the virus can cause fear to be the dominating emotion in our hearts and homes. In times of fear, people can allow the less human sides of themselves to control their lives. People stockpile, treat others aggressively, and attack, all from fear. There is also a secondary option when it comes to the fear we experience in relation to our circumstances. This second option can be called altruism. I like to call it sacrifice.

This newspaper delivery guy was doing his normal rounds when he realized something had changed among his elderly customers.

Greg Dailey has been delivering newspapers for years now. Located in Mercer County, New Jersey, he has built himself a decently large clientele. As time has gone on, however, Greg’s arm isn’t what it used to be. His aim is a bit off and he can’t get it as far as he used to.

While delivering to an elderly customer, Greg realized things were different. He decided to investigate.

An 88-year-old customer has been on his route for quite some time. She requests that Greg tosses the newspaper down her entire driveway and land it near her garage door. Greg is experienced but he can’t make the throw all the way to the driveway. That when he realized something.

His customer wasn’t trying to be mean or grouchy, she was genuinely scared to leave her house.

Most of the news has been quick to note the danger that the virus poses to the elderly. Greg realized that his neighbor was afraid to even travel the distance from her front door to the end of her driveway! He decided to give her a call.

At the supermarket, Greg got to thinking about the lady. Giving her a call, he asked if she needed anything from the store. He was unprepared for what would follow in the coming days.

Knowing that she must be scared, he was curious how the woman was getting any food! He decided to call and see if he could grab anything for her. She gave him a list and then asked if he could also grab something for her neighbor. Then it began. Greg was not the neighborhood grocery deliverer!

With a route that had 725 customers, Greg had his work cut out for him!

Placing a note in each of the homes he delivered to, he offered his services to those who need it. Within the first day, Greg had already had nine people contact him! More than that, people who didn’t need the help offered to help him out with people who did!

The entire family now plays a part in helping their community.

Using digital documentation to keep track of everything, then shop and then sort everything in the living room. They disinfect everything multiple times and make sure they are very intentional about cross-contamination. They don’t charge a dime for the entire service, either! Greg’s old baseball coach is one of the people who utilize his service! Now 77-years-old, he is thankful for Greg and his family.
