Kansas City Chief player celebrates Super Bowl win by paying adoption fees at local shelter
People celebrate significant events in their lives in a variety of ways. The award for the most unique could belong to Kansas City Chiefs player Derrick Nnadi. The rookie defensive tackle chose a great way to celebrate his teams win in Super Bowl LIV, by paying for the adoption fees at a local KC animal shelter.
A player with a heart of gold
Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, the 23-year-old has been working with the KC Pet Project all year. In the past, the player sponsored one adoption for every game his team won, and so he saw this as another opportunity to help. Heading into the game, Nnadi decided that the win would call for something even bigger. It was then that he decided to pay for all of the dog adoptions at the KC Pet Project shelter.
Posting on Twitter, the KC Pet Project had this to say about Nnadi’s gesture, “What an incredibly generous gesture and we want to thank Derrick for his support all season long,”
The shelter is a big supporter of the team
The shelter, which are big Chiefs fans in their own right, often posts pictures of their dogs in Kansas City Chiefs’ jerseys. Chiefs fans were likewise applauding Nnadi’s efforts, including one woman who tweeted a response to Nnadi’s selfless efforts.
“I don’t follow football, but I’ll be damned if I’m not a fan of yours now!! THANK YOU for being a REAL MAN!!!!”
Potential adopters gathered outside the shelter after hearing the news
News of Nnadi’s kind and compassionate gesture soon gained nationwide recognition, being shared at a variety of national news outlets. Soon, a crowd had gathered outside of the animal shelter, as potential adopters waited to take home new dogs for their homes.
“Wow, what a day!” the KC Pet Project wrote. “We want to thank all of the families who came out today and patiently waited to adopt a pet, and we are beyond grateful to Derrick Nnadi for this incredibly kind gesture helping our city’s pets.”
More about the KC Pet Project
In all, the offer covered about 109 dogs at the shelter. A nonprofit organization, the KC Pet Project cares for over 10,000 animals a year. The organization works with local Animal Control and other animal welfare organizations to raise the number of pets adopted, particularly in the area of homeless animals.
The organization’s mission is to end the killing of otherwise healthy and treatable animals in the Kansas City, Missouri area. It does this by promoting progressive, lifesaving programs and supporting the most effective animal control policies available.
Nnadi and the Chiefs are true animal lovers
In addition to Nnadi, other players on the team are supporters of the shelter and work with the organization to increase pet adoptions. For more on the KC Pet Project, visit the organization’s Website.
