Shelter throws Valentine’s adoption party for sweet shelter dog and absolutely nobody shows up
Some people just can’t seem to catch a break, and it gets pretty sad when it keeps going. We’ve all experienced periods like that. Popular literary works and photos capture this theme a lot too – everything from Charlie Brown in Peanuts to Greg Heffley in Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
We always feel incredible pity for those who can’t seem to catch a break.
Dogs can be in the same boat too. Just take a look at Luke over here.
First, a proper introduction.
Luke is a shelter dog at Battersea Brands Hatch in Kent, England.
He’s 5 years old and has lived at the shelter for the last 6 months.
It was long overdue that Luke find a home.
For Valentine’s Day, the folks at the pet shelter organized an adoption party for him.
They let potential visitors know who the celebrant was. So things should go pretty well, right?
If only.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, no one besides the staff showed up for Luke’s adoption party.
The sweet dog had spent so long without a home. Having no one show up was just salt in the wound.
One major personality trait of Luke’s is his shyness. Despite his fairly large size, large enough to be a guard dog, Luke is very reserved and quiet.
The dog doesn’t enjoy having a lot going on.
It overwhelms him, and he prefers to lay back and mind his own business.
He is an introvert in some ways. That makes it all the stranger that no one’s adopted him yet.
“Despite being a large dog, Luke is really just a big softie and enjoys nothing more than to cuddle up by a radiator with his favourite people and a cuddly toy. We’re really hoping that someone will love him for the big lapdog that he truly is and give him the chance to be loved as he deserves.”
Luke was taken into Battersea when he was a puppy, and the folks there knew nothing about his past life.
The only Luke they know is the sweet, shy pup who was brought in.
Battersea’s website makes special mention of how Luke gets on with other dogs. The answer is “Not very well.”
Luke isn’t one who enjoys mingling, and the company of other dogs can make him uncomfortable.
Once more, his introverted side shows itself.
“He will need owners who are experienced in owning large, nervous breeds before. We have found onsite that Luke is worried and intolerant of other dogs. He relies on his handler for guidance and support when meeting other dogs. So his new owners must have experience in this, and be able to read Luke’s body language to be able to tell when he is uncomfortable.”
The people at Battersea are determined to get him into a forever home. It’s the one thing he deserves. He might even grow out of his shyness if the right family adopts him.
So if you’re nearby, or know someone who’d appreciate a shy dog, then consider the idea at least.
Luke has only known the shelter his whole life. It’d be a shame if he spends the rest of it there. After his lonely adoption party, you really can’t help but feel for him.
