Couple ditches the traditional and lives in custom yurt with gorgeous interior
This couple lives in a so not-traditional living space that they built from scratch
We’ve all seen our fair share of unconventional homes and living spaces on the internet. There are people who convert old shipping containers into homes, live in houses shaped like spheres, or even make real-life Hobbit holes to live in.
This couple lives in a pretty unconventional home too. Though it’s a bit more practical than a sphere or a shipping container. They live inside their very own yurt.
What is a yurt, though?
If you’ve never heard of what a yurt is, here’s a quick history lesson: A yurt is a round and (sometimes) mobile tent supported by a latticework of wood. Yurts saw use by nomadic groups in Central Asia, and in present-day, they’re usually given a modern-spin.
Zach and Nicole considered a lot of options before the yurt. They’d previously lived in a fancy van, and briefly considered a submarine they saw on Craigslist. That’s when they had the idea to choose a yurt.
One advantage the yurt had over the submarine was, well, it didn’t have to be underwater.
Of course, they needed to build it first. So they enlisted some help from their family and friends. Zach even mentions that some of them didn’t even have any building experience prior.
Though blood, lots of sweat, and maybe some tears too, the group effort succeeded and they were able to finish construction of the yurt.
With ground spikes firmly planted 3 feet into the earth, it’s got a solid foundation too
In the days of nomadic travelers of Central Asia, yurts were sometimes built without deep ground spikes to keep them mobile and easily collapsible. Zach and Nicole though, wanted theirs to be an actual residence.
Zach gives a tour of the interior. They get their power from the nearby city, and use well water for everything except drinking (they have a purified water dispenser for that instead). The latticework is meant to be exposed, he says.
The central bit that partly supports the roof is decorated with lights and philodendrons
And the yurt is as functional as it is pretty. Zach even managed to find a large enough space to work inside, with his laptop and shelves right where he needs them to be.
That divider you see in the center is, in fact, also the bathroom! And it’s quite a lot roomier inside than you’d expect. The well water they use for bathing has left a visible stain on the shower walls, which Zach, humbly and humorously points out. Zach, Nicole and Living Big then laugh it off.
The bathroom is conservative, but practical
The compost toilet is easy to use, and they’ve never had any problems with it, says Nicole. Being minimalist usually means having less things, but the two of them think that hiding your things out of sight works just as well. Point taken.
The top of the central, supporting bathroom-divider bit also houses the bedroom on top. Evidently, they’ve made clever use of their living space. The philodendrons are a pain to water, as all of them are real and not plastic according to Zach.
Zach and Nicole documented the planning and construction on a site they call “Do it Yurtself”, so you can see a near step-by-step recap of how they did it, and also be graced with Zach’s amazing pun.
The skylight is perhaps the pride and glory of this yurt
The stars in the night sky and the morning sun peeping through the clouds are in full view from their bedroom up top. To be completely honest, we’d love to have a view like this from our rooms too.
Living in a yurt must be a blast, but obviously it may not be for everyone. Though we can’t deny that Zach and Nicole’s not-so-little project is nothing short of amazing. You can play the video below since you definitely need to see it for yourself.
