Mother walks into son's hospital room to comfort him after surgery – finds him in his nurse's arms

Hospitals can be a terrifying place for a child. Cold and strange, hospitals just aren’t that inviting to anyone. Children especially don’t want to be left alone at the hospital when they’re not feeling well. But when a child has to go into surgery, unfortunately, parents can’t be in the operation room.

Thankfully there are wonderful nurses and doctors who are devoted to keeping patients safe and calm.

At UPMC Susquehanna hospital in Williamsport, Pennsylvania kind-hearted nurses are there to make anyone feel a whole lot better. 5-year-old Slade Thompson was going through some health problems and been undergoing multiple surgeries in a very short time.

The first surgery went exceptionally well but that meant Slade had to be in a wheelchair for two months.

For any 5-year-old it becomes draining to go to the hospital, so when Slade had to undergo his next surgery he was very weary. This operation Slade had to get surgery on his tonsils, adenoids, and both sides of his nose. Which he, of course, had to go under anesthesia.

Thankfully the surgery was another success but for any child coming out of anesthesia, it can be extremely scary and confusing.

When Slade woke up from his surgery all he wanted was to have his mother right beside him, unfortunately, she wasn’t there yet. But have no fear nurse Annie Hager is here to save the day.

Hager heard Slade start to cry and immediately rushed to soothe his aching heart.

Hager comforted him explaining his mom couldn’t be there yet but should be here very shortly. That’s when Slade asked Hager if she could snuggle him until his mom could be there.

Without question, nurse Hager had no problem holding sweet Slade.

When Slade’s mom Layla came to the room she was deeply moved by what she saw. So she immediately captured a picture of Slade and nurse Hager arm in arm. It’s so powerful to watch the compassion of healthcare workers, as they selflessly help anyone in need.

Slade’s mother Layla was incredibly grateful that nurse Hager was there to give her son peace of mind.

It’s nurses like that, that make the world a better place. In fact, Layla and Slade were so appreciative of nurse Hager’s gesture, they decided to bring her a surprise. Slade especially wanted to give the kind-hearted nurse another hug and some flowers.

So they went to the hospital to go visit nurse Hager.

Wildly enough Hager wasn’t even supposed to be working the day they visited but got called in. Thank goodness the stars aligned for them to reunite once again. Hager was so touched by their appreciation that she even posted a story of their interaction on her Instagram.

It’s rare for people to go out of their way to go thank the nurses and doctors that helped them.

I dont post things very often but this little guy touched my heart, and his mama's beautiful kind words and actions have brought tears to my eyes twice now! A few weeks ago Mr. Slade came out of surgery to the recovery room and was my first patient of the day. Let me tell ya, this little man was by far the bravest 5yr old I have ever met! Most kids scream their way out of anesthesia (to no fault of their own, it's a pretty normal response to all the stuff we give them) but Slade, although crying at times, was calm and sweet, but obviously scared and in some pain. All he wanted was his mommy who wasnt immediately available. He asked me if I would snuggle him and take care of him. I jumped right in that bed and snuggled up that little guy so fast! His small sweet request made my heart so full!!! His momma took this picture of us the day of surgery, and surprised me at work with these beautiful flowers and another BIG hug from my bestest little friend today! Layla Thompson I thank God everyday for people like you and your precious little man! I feel so blessed to have met you all that day and truly feel I've made some wonderful friends through it. This right here is why I LOVE my job. It is why I go to work everyday. Its moments like this that make it all worth it ❤❤❤❤
