Camera rolls as nurses cheer up hospitalized 3-year-old with 'hokey pokey'

Just imagine being stuck in the hospital as a child. Unfortunately, this is the reality that many sick kids face. It can be difficult for them and their families to deal with. But there are incredible nurses and medical staff who go above and beyond to brighten their patients’ days.

That’s especially true for Madison Austin’s nurses. This sweet 3-year-old lives in Illinois. She was born with a birth defect called Neuronal Migration Disorder, which causes her brain and muscles to develop improperly. She was first sent to the hospital after she started having seizures.

She loves to dance

Even though Madison might be in the hospital, that doesn’t mean she can’t have some fun. While on the internet one day, she found a video of the hokey pokey dance. And she quickly fell in love with it. She wanted to do that dance herself and was excited to show off her skills.

Her nurses wanted to help her

Because Madison’s nurses knew she’d be in the hospital for a long time, they wanted to do something that would make her stay there easier while putting a smile on her face. Considering everything she’s been through, this little girl deserved to laugh.

They knew she loved the dance

When Madison showed her nurses the dance she found and fallen in love with, they were thrilled it made her so happy. Eager to do anything they could to brighten her spirits, they decided to take things a step further.

They learned the hokey pokey too

It might be difficult to out dance little Madison, but the nurses tried their best. They got together in a group around her bed. Then, they played the song and started dancing. Although they wore personal protective equipment, they still looked like they were having a great time.

Madison loved the attention

Madison loved the fact that all the attention was on her for a moment, and she was thrilled that everyone was dancing for her. Then she decided to dance along with them so she could have just as much fun. You can tell she’s having a great time because there is a huge grin on her face during the entire song.

This precious 3-year-old’s mom wasn’t surprised

Madison’s mom, Krista, wasn’t one bit surprised to see her daughter making so many new friends in the hospital…and having such a good time. As she stated, “After all that Madison has been through in her life, she is the happiest, funniest, spunkiest, most polite child ever.” She’s had some medical hardships in her life. But that doesn’t take away from her exuberant spirit — or her love for dancing.

The dance boosted her mood

Okay, so Madison’s a spunky child but she still doesn’t like being in the hospital. According to one of her nurses, “She’s been pretty sick this stay, so it’s been really nice to see her kind of turn a corner. She lit up just being on the bed, bouncing and smiling.”

This just goes to show how a little bit of kindness can quickly brighten up someone’s day…especially when they’re not feeling their best. Madison appreciates it, as does her mother.
