SUV with no driver barrels towards pedestrians – cop makes it stop with his bare hands
If the security camera footage didn’t prove it, you might not believe this story.
On December 16, 2019, a black SUV was parked on Boston Avenue in the business district of Bridgeport, Connecticut. But, somehow, with two passengers inside, it slipped out of park and began rolling down a hill towards the busy corner of Boston and Bond Avenues.
Luckily, Carlos Carmo Jr. was there.
He’s a 4-year veteran of the Bridgeport Police Department and serves as a resource officer at Harding High School. He was directing traffic in the crosswalk after school when he saw the curious sight – the SUV that drove by him had no driver.
One passenger was in the passenger’s side seat and one in the back and they were understandably panicked about rolling down a hill with no one behind the wheel. Even worse, it was headed for a sidewalk crowded with students.
“I was just thinking in my mind, ‘I got to find a way to stop this,'” Carmo told Good Morning America.
He tried warning the students, but many couldn’t hear him and had no idea a car was picking up speed and could possibly hit them.
“They all had headphones on and I was screaming at them,” Carmo recalled. “They basically didn’t hear me. I don’t even think they knew what was going on until it was over.”
In the end, no one was injured, but that’s because Carmo managed to do the unthinkable.
He saw the car just in time as it passed by him and realized what was happening. In the video, you can see him looking at the car and immediately turning as it drove by him.
Then he chased it down on foot.
It all happened in a matter of seconds and his quick thinking and bravery may very well have saved lives.
Once the officer caught up with the SUV, he managed to grab on to it – and he pulled it to a stop with his bare hands!
It dragged him down the street, leaving his shoes skidding on the sidewalk, for a few feet before it came to a complete stop thanks to Carmo’s strength.
“My adrenaline basically kicked in at that point. I used my strength while dragging my feet along the ground … before the SUV could collide with anyone or anything.”
Carmo was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital but released immediately after.
He recalled the terror of the people inside the car at the time:
“The people in the car as I was holding it and trying to stop it … were freaking out a little bit, they were screaming.”
We would be too!
And while he’s being hailed as a “superhero” by some, Carmo is taking it in stride, chalking it up to instinct and training.
“We go through a lot of scenarios, but that’s not a scenario they teach us in the academy. That’s just one of those things where your instinct kicks in and you basically do what you got to do to keep these kids safe.”
Bridgeport’s Mayor, Joseph P. Ganim, held a ceremony to publicly recognize Carmo’s “bravery, selflessness, and quick thinking in this emergency situation that could have been tragic had he not intervened” a few days before Christmas.
The mayor thanked him on behalf of the city:
βIt was spur of the moment, you put your own life at risk, and you saved the people that were in the vehicle, people the vehicle was headed towards,β Ganim said in the release. βOn behalf of a grateful City, I want to say thank you very much.β
