Officer wraps jacket around dog and offers her comfort after being hit by car

A police officer from Florida is being praised for the compassion he showed to a poor dog that had been hit by a car.

The dog was clearly in pain but the officer did his best to comfort her, even using his own coat to help keep her warm.

“It was cold out. She was wet,” said Deputy Josh Fiorelli. “She didn’t have anyone there so I decided to be that person.”

The officer continued to give comfort until help arrived.

Carlos Irizzy stumbled upon the scene while he was out walking his dog. He decided to take a photo of the kind-hearted officer’s actions.

“This is something you don’t see every day,” Irizzy said to WFTV.

Injured dogs can sometimes be defensive.

Injured dogs can sometimes be sent into a panic. They could view a stranger as a potential threat while they are vulnerable.

This dog seemed very trusting of humans, however, and seemed to understand that the officer was there to help her.

“I know a lot of dogs become defensive when they get hurt. She was not defensive at all. She was acceptive of me trying to pet her and take care of her,” Fiorelli said.

The dog was taken to Osceola County Animal Shelter. After arriving, it was determined that she had a dislocated leg and would require surgery.

She would make a full recovery.

The shelter also gave her some medication for the pain that she was in.

She wasn’t microchipped.

Unfortunately, the injured dog was not microchipped and did not have a collar. This makes it nearly impossible to find who their owner is.

It also delays how quickly she can be given medical attention. The shelter must wait 3 days for the owner to come forward before they can give her the surgery she needs.

Officer Fiorelli hopes this story will encourage more pet owners to microchip their dogs and have them wear a collar.

“Keep an eye on them. They may only be a part of your life, but you’re their whole life,” he said.

Deputy Fiorelli praised for his compassion

Many people who have learned of this story have praised Deputy Fiorelli for the compassion he showed that day.

“Deputy Fiorelli cares for an injured dog who was hit by a car and waits with him until animal control arrives. Thank you Deputy Fiorelli for serving with care and compassion,” reads a Facebook post from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Many people responded to the Facebook post and thanked Fiorelli for the care he gave the injured dog.

“It takes a special person to be so compassionate to comfort this injured dog shame on the person that lefted him hurt and alone,” one person wrote.

“Thank you so much, Officer Fiorelli, for showing compassion to that poor little girl. So glad you were there for her,” wrote another.

“Thank you for being there to help this poor furbaby. Would love to know how he or she is doing. Praying all is well.”

Remember to microchip your dog in case they get lost or injured.
