Officer comes across teeny owl in the road and sparks up an adorable ‘conversation’

Our jobs can be full of surprises.

Sometimes we can come across unique circumstances – something different than our usual, routine encounters. Either it is something hysterically out-of-this-word, or surprisingly weird or amusing. These are the days we can say there’s never a dull moment in our jobs.

Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies were roving around town when they reached a road near a campground. It was quiet, and trees surrounded the path. As they moved ahead, a juvenile Northern Saw-whet owl stood in the middle.

Saw-whets, like other owls, are nocturnal beings.

They hunt between dusk and dawn and prey upon mice and other small mammals. Its cat-like face and bright yellow eyes looked lost – maybe he was since it wasn’t even dusk yet. His home was probably nearby, and he wandered off.

It was like seeing a lost child in the middle of the woods.

The deputies had to stop to check on the little guy and make sure he went home safely. But that’s not before the deputy and the owl had an adorable conversation.

The deputy first greeted the tiny owl with a friendly “Hi!” and it clicked back in response. It then swayed and twisted its head left, right, up, and down as if studying the human in front of it. She said another “Hi,” and the owl responded with another click.

“What’s up?” the deputy asked, and the owl clicked again.

The deputy said the owl soon flew away to safety, but they could only hope it found its way home.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office shared this encounter on social media.

On Facebook, people were raving about how cute the tiny creature was and how kind the officers were to ensure it flew away safely. But the gold in that comment thread? The jokes and puns that people made of that encounter.

Here are some of our favorites:

Bryan Kuriger did his take on the classic chicken crossing the road. He wrote:

“Why did the owl cross the road? To get to the hooters on the other side!”

Got a good laugh on that one? Here’s another by David Rodecap:

“Do you know why I stopped you?”
“I don’t give a hoot.”

Sure, people were making all those jokes, but they were more than happy to see the act of kindness the deputies performed for the little owl.
