8-year-old sad she's missing daddy-daughter dance after losing father – kind officer steps in

The Daddy-Daughter Dance is one of the most special events for young girls to enjoy with their fathers, but sadly, not everyone has a daddy of their own to take along for the occasion.

That was the case for Van Buren School District second-grader, 8-year-old Avey Cox, whose father had sadly passed away.

The devastated young girl thought that she’d simply have to stay home while all of her classmates enjoyed the evening, but fate had other plans in store for her!

The resource officer at Avey’s school, Corporal Nick Harvey, thought it would be nice if he and some other volunteers stepped in to help out the kids like Avey who didn’t have dads to enjoy the dance with them.

“I reached out to the mother, and she said it was okay, because the last thing I want to do is get rejected by a second grader!” joked Corporal Harvey in an interview with 5NEWS.

He explained that he then had to formally ask little Avey if she’d accept him as her date for the Daddy-Daughter Dance. Luckily, Avey said yes and the pair set to work on picking out matching outfits, as well as reserving a spot in the super long limo that had been hired to take the girls and their fathers to the dance!

They took plenty of pictures throughout the night, with Avey saying that “It meant a lot” to her and Corporal Harvey also called it a night to remember, saying that he and Avey had a terrific time, even in spite of his less-than-awesome dance moves!

Harvey joked that he danced to the best of his abilities, despite not really knowing how to do it, but his efforts were more than enough to ensure that little Avey had a wonderful night out.

Avey said that her favorite parts of the evening were being able to take so many pictures together and seeing Corporal Harvey dance.

She got a little emotional when asked about it in the interview, but Corporal Harvey was there to give her a hug and let her know that everything was okay.

In fact, he’s so committed to brightening this young girl’s life that he even offered to take her to the Daddy-Daughter Dance every year from now on!

What an amazing guy.

It’s absolutely inspiring to know that there are such genuinely good people in the world as Corporal Harvey, ready to step in and be the hero in any situation.

Without his kind intervention, Avey would have sadly missed out on this special moment, and while it’s tragic that her own father couldn’t have been there for the big night, it’s still good to know that she had someone special by her side.

Corporal Harvey deserves a lot of credit for his act of kindness and we’re sure that a special bond has formed between him and Avey since that night. Check out the video below to learn more about the story.
