Forest officer gets sweetest “thank you” from baby elephant he led back to mama

If only animals could talk.

Most of the time, humans wish for the power to commune with animals so we can know how they feel about us.

And while we communicate through different means, some animals employ other ways to express their feelings especially when they feel thankful.

An elephant calf was reunited with her family through the efforts of local law enforcement.

The calf allegedly fell into a pit in the Pandalur forest. The elephant was unable to dig itself.

He’d gotten stuck.

The forest personnel said it must’ve been a part of a local herd.

Circumstances surrounding the accident were unclear but the personnel said the herd was calling for help.

“The calf might have fallen into the pit the previous night.” An official said to the Times of India, “The herd trumpeted for help to rescue the calf.”

The rescue was not easy.

According to the Time of India, the team spent nearly two hours retrieving the fallen calf.

To make matters worse, the calf was weak as it hasn’t eaten since it fell into the pit.

The rescuers fed the calf some lactogen and glucose to maintain its energy. Eventually, they got the young elephant to safety. However, their task is far from over.

The calf had lost its herd.

Hoping to find the mother elephant, the team searched for the group until they stumbled upon them around a kilometer away from the site.

They also mentioned that they didn’t bring the calf with them.

Elephants’ sense of smell is quite strong and the officials feared the herd will leave the calf entirely if they smell humans with her.

To help the calf reunite with her family, they made her walk.

The young elephant followed the team with so much enthusiasm. It must’ve sensed the team’s intentions of returning her to the herd.

It was an adventure.

After reaching the area where the elephants were, the young elephant did something totally unexpected.

It was an unforgettable “thank you”.

The calf walked right up to the side of one of the forest personnel and wrapped its trunk around his leg.

People suspect that the elephant was saying “thank you” in the subtlest way and in the only manner she knew how.

People all over the internet loved the whole moment.

One forest personnel posted the photo and said,

“Love has no language.”

“Tears of joy in my eyes. You people are making the lives of the inhabitants of the forests beautiful. God bless you and your team,” tweeted another.

The team then left the calf to its herd. At first, the team was threatened by the herd when two of the adult elephants seemed to charge at them.

They all retreated to protect themselves.

Eventually, when they came back to check the area, they saw signs that the baby elephant had left.

They also saw footprints of the herd around the spot where they left the calf so they are confident that the group took the little calf with them.

“Elephant care for their young ones and family members like we do,” an official said to the local newspaper.
