Cop makes the news after asking a young girl in a “suspicious vehicle” to come to the sidewalk
The Huntington Beach, California, Police Department received a special call on a Wednesday morning. It had to do with a “suspicious vehicle.” Though when the police arrived to observe, the vehicle wasn’t the kind of suspicious they were expecting.
Inside the vehicle were a mother and her 11-year old daughter.
They were homeless and living in their car.
There are countless stories of such living conditions across the United States, and each one is just as heartbreaking as the last.
This just wouldn’t do.
The police department started calling around to get some housing in order for the mother and daughter.
One of the officers thought it’d be a good idea to ease the tension a bit.
So how about a game of hopscotch?
Pulling out some chalk and some leg energy, officer Zach Pricer invited the 11-year old to play hopscotch with him. She was completely unfamiliar with the game and its rules. Officer Pricer had to teach her.
The officer empathized with the young girl.
A lot of things were happening that most 11-year-olds don’t have to go through. Anything to help remove some of her anxiety would be a tremendous help.
βFor an 11-year-old girl, to see a police officer towering over her is a scary thing. I was trying to break the ice and get her to feel comfortable with me.β – he explained to Orange County Register
So the game started and Officer Pricer showed her how to play.
He showed her how to draw the hopscotch grid, toss the stone, and hop according to the rules.
She learned how to play and enjoyed the game.
While Officer Pricer’s little friendly move was very kind, it seems like he was a bit rusty when it came to the finer rules of hopscotch. The video’s viral status meant that countless people could now “critique” his hopscotch skills and finesse.
Pricer’s department shared the little scene on their Facebook page.
They got a ton of friendly comments and a ton of hopscotch critics too.
“Officer Pricer may need a little more practice at his sweet hopscotch skills” – one commenter wrote
“I think he cheated:) It’s been a long time since I’ve played hopscotch but I think you are supposed to hop the entire thing not hop/walk.”
Another one wrote “He cheated, he used his left hand to touch the ground so as to maintain his balance!”
