Bella and Snowball had a home and an owner. One an elderly Golden retriever mix, the other a blind and petite Chihuahua mix. We can tell they were cared for solely from the fact they’d lived this long.

However, thanks to some unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, they were laid off and dropped at an animal shelter

Not an ideal place for elderly and blind dogs, clearly. Why did their previous owner give them up? Were they hard on money, or did they just grow tired of them?

We might never know, though what matters now is the predicament they’re in

To add onto the list of things Bella and Snowball had to deal with, animals at this shelter are euthanized if they don’t get adopted quickly. Talk about making a sad story even sadder.

Although Bella and Snowball aren’t the only animals that had to face these grim circumstances. Abandonment and potential euthanization are a reality for countless pets across the United States alone.

Bella looked to be the more shaken between the two. She was always Snowball’s own seeing-eye dog. Yes, a dog with a seeing-eye dog. Who would’ve thought?

In their small little cage within the shelter, Bella barely moved and the gloom and despair had set it. She looked almost depressed, and Snowball made regular efforts to nudge her and perk her up. Sorry to keep tugging your heart strings.

Now is a great time to repeat a vital point again : A pet is not something you can just throw away or leave when you grow tired of it.

All too often, our obsession and desire for cute, young pets takes priority over responsibility and common sense

This leads to many folks impulsively buying, adopting or taking home pets that they’re not prepared to care for. Likewise, the same thought process is dominant in these shelters.

Countless people walk past the elderly dogs like Bella and Snowball, instead favoring younger and “cuter” ones while the old ones patiently sit and await what might happen to them.

Unfortunately, none of us can just adopt the entire shelter and magically save all the animals. Although some things you could do are to adopt instead of buying, and learn to be a responsible pet owner so others can follow your example.

It doesn’t sound as good as trying to save the whole shelter, but it’s definitely better than nothing

Bella and Snowball waited. They kept each other company in the long days staying in the shelter. What might happen to them? After all, this shelter euthanizes animals that aren’t adopted quickly. The two weren’t exactly as cute, young or healthy as the other animals sharing residence with them.

Things seemed hopeless indeed. But this story has a happy ending, fortunately

As luck, or perhaps fate would have it, a couple saw the two in the kennels. They learned about who the dogs were and why they were here. All this convinced them to pick up the two dogs, and now Bella and Snowball would have a new home.

The dogs were about as excited as their new owners were. In no small part thanks to saving them from being put down. Many people will think it sad that rescuing dogs like this is what counts as good news, but good news is in short supply these days.

Bella and Snowball get to go home together once again, just as they should. The couple that adopted them did a wonderful thing, and the dogs won’t forget it. Nor should we!
