Women celebrate being “Older Ladies” with song and dance cracking everyone up
Love can mean many things, but when two people promise to commit to one another for a lifetime, it goes without saying that accepting that the other will age is part of the deal.
And while the world is obsessed with anti-aging, from the cellular to the cosmetic levels, the truth is that we’re all going to get older – if we’re lucky.
If you don’t love your partner anymore when their hair goes gray or their body goes through natural changes, then maybe you didn’t really love them after all.
Or at least that’s the point Donnalou Stevens is trying to make in her viral song “Older Ladies.”
She and some friends made a fun-loving video for the song, and since it was uploaded in 2014 it’s been viewed well over 17 million times. It was actually funded by a Kickstarter campaign that got funded 300%!
A celebration of how lucky one is to have the privilege of aging, Stevens also makes the point that it’s perfectly ok to look older AND like it!
From “my hair is grey and I like it that way” to having some cellulite and not really being bothered by it, she makes a good point – “If that’s the reason you don’t love me, then maybe that’s not love.”
People who can afford the luxury can have all sorts of Botox and liposuction to take away the sagging and jiggles, but they certainly shouldn’t have to just to prove to someone that they’re worthy of being loved.
Dressed in some funky clothing, Stevens and her friends send a pretty empowering message: they can be honest about what’s going on, laugh at themselves, and call out anyone who doesn’t like the way they look.
After all, with age brings wisdom, and wisdom tells us that happiness doesn’t come from outside validation.
Donning bathing suits, the women also make the point that they are still hot and that their bodies are nothing to be ashamed of just because they’ve been around a few decades longer than your average Instagram “influencer.”
Stevens sings:
“See, I’m no longer desperate. I’ll only have a man if he has the smarts to see how hot that I still am.”
Now that’s taking back the power!
Any man who wants “a younger model” is wished the best of luck. You see, those women age too.
Adding some men to the mix, we eventually get to the yodeling part of the song – and that’s when the song title comes in: “Older Ladies…are divine,” they sing.
Got a problem with sagging chins or breasts?
Well, don’t go knocking on these women’s doors – they don’t want you anyway!
As you can see, the video gets pretty cheeky!
From bathing suits to ballgowns these women are fearless about showing that their bodies are nothing to be ashamed of.
Comments on the video were overwhelmingly positive. Stevens herself chimed in to say that she had been asked by a Korean broadcasting company how she defined beauty and gave a long list of what it meant to her, including:
“True beauty is not about appearance, it is about choosing to be kind no matter what.”
It’s also about eating when you’re hungry, expressing emotions when you have them, having the wisdom to accept others’ opinions and refrain from gossip, being happy for others, and – perhaps most importantly – to never give up on love.
A few extra years will give any man or woman the insight they need to see love really means.
