Usually, when a dog takes a liking to something, the dog will go out of its way to protect it. That is exactly what happened with one German shepherd when her mom and dad brought home a lobster. The plan was to cook it for dinner, but Sami had other ideas.

The family pet makes a new friend

As the family prepares for dinner, they go to get the lobster from Sami who is nuzzling the little guy on the kitchen floor. Hunched over the lobster protectively, Sami whines as her dad tries to grab the lobster. According to her owners, Sami has always had a motherly side, so her behavior towards the lobster was expected.

Her parents were a little surprised, even though she had acted in this manner toward babies, kittens, and even a pet snake. Sami tries to hide the lobster under her head as her dad reaches for it. She also throws her legs around it protectively to keep her dad away, whining the whole time. Her parents take her actions in stride as you can hear them giggling about the incident off camera.

Sami’s devotion to protecting her lobster friend was captured as Sami and her mom and dad visited family in New Hampshire for the holidays.

Some viewers seem to think that Sami might be guarding the lobster-like a resource, a reaction common in dogs. She could also be acting possessively over the lobster as opposed to viewing it as a friend. Either way, she sure is protective of the little guy and won’t let anyone near it.

“She knows the lobster is not her puppy. It is a living piece of food, basically,” said Andrea Kilkenny, a professional dog trainer, and owner of Our Gang Pet Services.

As another dog, Sami’s cousin, leans down to check the lobster out, Sami bares her teeth to warn him away. The other dog smartly turns away and leaves the lobster alone. It just goes to show the attachment that can develop between one animal and another.

“We love dogs so much,” Kilkenny said. “It’s always interesting to me how people don’t understand the behavior of a species they share a home with. The more people educate themselves about [animal] behavior, the more harmonious our relationships will be.”

If Sami only knew the truth about the lobster’s claws

Eventually, Sami’s parents take the lobster away. They do have to eat after all. Maybe they can give her something to take the lobster’s place, such as a ball or other toy. It was probably for the best too. Sami had no idea what the lobster’s claws could do. If she did, she might have thought twice about trying to protect it so much.

Sami ends up getting a new friend, a puppy from her mom and dad

In an attempt to fill her maternal instincts, Sami’s family adopted a German shepherd puppy months after the video was shot. Sami and the puppy, named Gunny, are getting along great according to the pairs’ parents. Here is the video of Sami trying to protect her little lobster pal from both humans and animals.
