Freakishly large owl tries to intimidate a house cat by showing off its true size

Cats are naturally curious. It stems from their strong survival instinct which they inherited from their wild ancestors. They show curiosity because it’s influenced by their natural impulse to hunt for food or escape from predators.

One cat (almost) got in trouble for being curious.

In one viral video, a cat can be seen exploring in the yard. He was simply exploring the environment outside of his home.

Then, he came across a bird.

Usually, a cat would feel excited to see a bird. Its instinct to hunt would kick in and he’d run after it.

Unfortunately, the bird was different.

It’s not one of those birds he can chase away or bully easily. It’s several times bigger and more dangerous than him.

It was an owl!

The minute the cat saw the owl, he knew he was in trouble. He stayed still and refused to make any movement that could make the owl angry. Throughout the video, he remained perfectly still.

The owl was determined to overpower the cat.

Its size already made it scary. However, for some reason, the bird decided to scare the cat even more.

It started lifting its wings as if to tell the cat that it’s way bigger and stronger than him. It took a couple of steps as if testing the cat’s reaction.

The cat did the right thing.

He continued to stay still as the owl intimidated him. He did not run or take a single step.

The viral video has been viewed over 400,000 times.

Most of the viewers showed support for the cat. For them, the cat did the right thing. Some of them felt scared for the cat.

His human didn’t abandon him.

He was actually inside the house when the encounter happened. He looked out the window and saw the cat and the owl. Thinking that it’s a rare event, he decided to grab his camera and take a video for a few seconds. When he got out of the house to check the cat, the bird flew away in an instant.

The cat was lucky.

It’s a fact that owls eat cats. These birds live on a meat-based diet. With their excellent hunting skills and their ability to fly, they can easily hunt and kill small pets.

Keeping cats safe from owls

No matter how hard you try, you can’t be around to watch your cat 24/7. The best thing you can do is take precautions.

For example, try not to leave your cat to wander outside of your house. Close any open windows, particularly at night. Find activities that can entertain your pet so it wouldn’t try to explore the outdoor world. Put on a collar with strobe lights on your cat. It’ll confuse owls and scare them away.

If you see an owl trying to hurt your pet, the first thing you need to do is try to scare it away. You can make loud noises or shine a light on it. You can also consider blowing a whistle or scream at it.

In case your cat gets attacked by an owl, call your vet right away. Even if you can’t see life-threatening bite marks and scratches, it’s possible for cats to experience mental trauma.
