Owner tries his best but just can’t trick his clever 3-month-old German shepherd
He might be little, but he cannot be bamboozled!
Dogs, no matter how smart, can do silly things. Your dog may know how to fetch, play dead, and follow cues – but once you throw the blanket and disappear behind it or let them choose the cup with the most treats, letâs just say they arenât as smart as we hoped them to be.
But in a video posted on the social media site TikTok, a puppy refused to give in to his ownerâs tricks. He sure is small but that doesnât you can just pull a fast one on him!
Smitten the German shepherd is well-trained.
His over 37,000 followers on TikTok watched him as he tried to recall his training. In the opening seconds of the video, his owner said that his release command is the word âfreeâ and that he was about to trick him.
Smitten sat in place patiently. Then, his owner began saying words that start with âfrâ like âFrenchâ, âfreakâ, and âfrog.â
For every trick word that his owner said, Smitten perked up.
But this little dog is smart! He refused to move even if the words can be a bit confusing for other dogs. Not Smitten, though! Heâs a German shepherd and he has the skills to show up for it.
According to the American Kennel Club, German shepherd dogs stand out because of their loyalty, confidence, courage, and intelligence. As a breed created for a purpose, these dogs can be trained easily as they have high instruction retention.
As such, they veered away from their first purpose of shepherding and were instead used in the military and law enforcement.
Then, his owner said âfrostingâ.
The little dog almost lunged at him but he quickly reeled from this moment of weakness. We know other people wouldâve approached immediately after that word but not Smitten.
Then, his owner said, âfree.â Smitten quickly jumped to his feet and pounced at his owner. Such a smart and adorable puppy!
Release words are as important as the command âstay.â
According to the American Kennel Club, these two commands should be taught at the same time. A dog should know the âstayâ command and should know when to get out of the âstayâ mode through a ârelease word.â
They shared that when teaching âstay,â you should have already chosen a release word. Reward your dog for staying in place then after saying the release word, reward your dog again for approaching.
If your dog already knows the stay command but doesnât have a release word yet, donât fret. You can still follow the same process but you may have to coax or encourage your dog to move.
His owner mustâve been proud of Smitten.
In his other videos, you can see how smart the 3-month-old puppy is. Just recently, he taught Smitten how to open a lamp.
In other videos, he proudly showed how quickly Smitten responds to commands like âcenterâ where he goes between his ownerâs legs, âwalkâ to canter with the same pace, and some barking commands. With a dog like that, you can kiss your dreams of bamboozling goodbye!
