Owner prices coffee by kindness to teach the value of being polite
Many people believe that âthe customer is always right.â
But are they? And can it really justify the unsolicited rudeness and impolite behavior?
This café owner from Roanoke, Virginia believes otherwise and just so happens to know how to curb unruly behavior.

Standing just outside the rustic doors of local café CUPS Coffee and Tea, a small sandwich board bears the menu for the day.
At first glance, youâd quickly notice the rather overpriced cup of brewed coffee at $5.00.
You donât even know if thatâs coming from a brewed pot of exotic beans.
Right under that is a coffee for $3.00. Then another one at $1.75. Once you look more closely, youâll notice that they are all the same thing â âsmall coffeeâ. So why are they priced so different?
The answer lies in the quotes right above the price.
Tired of rude customers who mightâve missed their morning bus, got off the wrong side of the bed, or who are just flaunting their misplaced self-importance at unsuspecting baristas, Austin Simms came up with an idea.
The premise, he shared to local news, is to incentivize people and their good manners.
The sandwich board right outside their café shows how much people would have to pay if they decide to be unpleasant.
âI decided, because I need to solve all the injustices of the world, to start charging more for people who didnât take the time to say hello and connect and realize weâre all people behind the counter,â Simms shared with WDBJ7.
At a time where most people swear by the ethos of âThe customer is always rightâ, common courtesy and decency become the unsuspecting casualties in any conversation between customers and cashiers.
Customers often forget that the people who serve them are just as human as they are.
A cup of coffee in CUPS starts at $5.00. Pretty steep price even considering it comes from the same pot. Say the magic word âpleaseâ like âOne small coffee, please?â then the price drops to $3.00. But if you decide to be a little nicer and lace your request with a greeting, it comes down to $1.75.
All you have to do is say âHello, Iâd like one small coffee, please.â
The entire idea might sound juvenile but it can still be an effective way to put basic manners back into our everyday lives. We can only hope that this small gesture can reduce the instances of unnecessary anxiety and stress brought on by impolite language and rude disposition.
CUPS Coffee and Teaâs signage gained traction after it made rounds in Redditâs message boards.
While others canât be bothered and would rather buy coffee someplace else, others agreed that a little decency goes a long way.
So before you order that cup of coffee, why donât you pause and rethink how youâll say your request.

After all, you may have the money to pay, but it canât buy good manners and common courtesy.
